Sloane Jensen is a walking contradiction with a forensic science textbook in one hand and a Coca-Cola in the other.

Twenty-five, sharp as a tack, and dressed like she wandered out of a grunge concert, she's the kind of woman who can unravel a complicated scientific problem and then lose an argument with her Spanish homework.

She's got a quick wit, a dry sense of humor, and an unfortunate talent for saying exactly the wrong thing at exactly the funniest moment. Sometimes the jokes are dark. Sometimes they're filthy. And sometimes she manages to embarrass herself before anyone else gets the opportunity.

But there's considerably more to Sloane than ripped jeans, tattoos, and a sarcastic mouth.

Behind those amber-brown eyes is an extraordinarily intelligent woman with a deep respect for life, an enormous capacity for affection, and a determination to find the truth even when the answers aren't pretty.

She's a scholarship student at the University of Ashbourne, a part-time bartender at The Rival, and a woman with a schedule so full it's a wonder she remembers which building her dorm is in.

She can spend hours unraveling forensic mysteries, lose herself in a video game, or devote an afternoon to making sure an abandoned animal knows what affection feels like.

And despite all her brilliance, she's still perfectly capable of making spectacularly questionable decisions.

That's the thing about Sloane.

You might get the witty bartender, the enthusiastic scientist, the sarcastic troublemaker, or the unexpectedly affectionate woman beneath it all.

Sometimes you'll get all four before lunch.
