A Complete History of the Diremarch of Fenngard Pre-0 A.E. – 2025 A.E.
Overview
The Diremarch of Fenngard is a northern militaristic nation known for its iron discipline, harsh winters, stoic culture, and formidable martial tradition. National colors: Deep Blue, Steel Gray, and Black. Its people value duty, strength, and order above all. For centuries it has been both a respected military power and a source of tension with its neighbors.
Historical Timeline
Pre-0 A.E. The lands of Fenngard were home to several fierce, semi-nomadic Viking-style clans. The most prominent were the Iron Wolves, Frost Hearths, and Ashen Reavers.
The Great Eclipse – Year 0 The Emberforge Caldera eruption caused widespread chaos. The northern clans survived through sheer endurance and raiding.
Ashen Centuries to Fractured Thrones (1 A.E. – 1100 A.E.) The three major clans remained independent but frequently allied for mutual defense and raids. They developed a reputation as formidable warriors.
Unification – 1110 A.E. The Iron Wolves, Frost Hearths, and Ashen Reavers formally united under the Diremarch of Fenngard. This marked the birth of the modern nation, with a strong centralized military hierarchy and the “Diremarch” (Supreme Marshal) as ruler.
Age of Holy Flames to Reawakening (1100–1650 A.E.) Gradual expansion and frequent border clashes with southern powers.
Age of Rising Banners (1650–1799 A.E.) Military reforms and growing rivalry with the Vulpine Concordat.
Age of Iron Banners (1799–1815 A.E.) Napoleonic analogue. Fenngard participated in several major campaigns.
Twin Crown War (1870 A.E.) Direct conflict with the Vulpine Concordat (Franco-Prussian analogue). Fenngard achieved several victories but suffered heavy losses.
First Emberline War (1910–1918 A.E.) WW1 analogue. After the war, the nation was destabilized, allowing the rise of the Diremarch Purity Front.
Rise of the Diremarch Purity Front (1920s–1930s) A fascist, ultra-nationalist movement led by Lorenz Halveth seized power amid economic hardship and national humiliation. The Purity Front emphasized racial purity, militarism, and authoritarian rule.
Second Emberline War (1939–1945 A.E.) WW2 analogue. Fenngard, under the Purity Front, fought on the Axis side. Near the end of the war, Lorenz Halveth was assassinated by Allied special forces. The Purity Front rapidly collapsed.
Post-War Era (1946–1991 A.E.) The Diremarch transitioned into a constitutional democratic republic. It underwent denazification-style reforms and gradually rebuilt its reputation. During the Cold Veil, it became a key ally against communist expansion and terrorist groups.
Modern Era (1992–2025 A.E.) A stable democratic republic with a strong professional military. It actively participates in international coalitions against terrorism, particularly operations targeting the Azure Reaver Syndicate.
The Chainbound – “Iron Doctrine” System
One of the most infamous institutions of the Diremarch was the Chainbound.
Origin: Introduced during the Age of Rising Banners (~1650–1799 A.E.).
Purpose: The Diremarch forcibly conscripted prisoners, conquered peoples, debtors, and criminals into military service under the Iron Doctrine.
Terms of Service: Chainbound soldiers were promised freedom and limited citizenship after successfully completing one full campaign (or a set number of years).
The Forgiven Line: Near the end of their service, surviving Chainbound were transferred into elite “Forgiven Line” units. They were symbolically granted red trousers and red capes/helmets — a visible mark of redemption and trust. These units often served as shock troops or elite assault formations.
The Chainbound system was controversial even within Fenngard. Reformers viewed it as brutal slavery, while traditionalists saw it as a path to redemption through blood and duty.
Abolition: The system was officially ended after the First Emberline War by Lorenz Halveth and the rising Purity Front. Halveth declared the Iron Doctrine “impure” and replaced it with more ideologically driven conscription and racial purity policies. The last Chainbound units were disbanded or absorbed during the interwar period.
