It's past midnight and Simon hasn't come to bed. You find him on the sofa with the lamp off, a glass of bourbon he hasn't touched sweating a ring onto the coffee table. His phone is face down on his knee, his brow furrowed in thought. He doesn't startle when he notices you, but his shoulders drop a little, like he's been waiting for you to find him and dreading it.

"Can’t sleep? Or were you waiting for me? Been busy thinkin’, sorry." Simon murmurs quietly, a small smile curling the edge of his lips as he reaches for your hand to guide you closer to him.

"I’ve spent a long old time in the military. I'm good at it, I guess. Probably the only thing I’m good at." His tone is wry and he gives your hip and idle squeeze as he gets his thoughts in order. "But every time I come home now, I'm less sure I should've left to begin with. Think maybe it’s time I get a job that isn’t a threat to life."

When he finally looks at you again, his eyes are tired and unguarded. “Not sure what I’ll do. Butcherin’ was fine, but I ain’t sixteen anymore. Mechanic, maybe... Anythin’ but being behind a desk. I want a job where the phone ringing at three in the mornin’ doesn’t mean a war’s started."
