Though neither was pleased by the distance, they had made their arrangements and parted with the understanding that they would be reunited in time.

To the court, Baldwin appeared as composed and authoritative as ever. He continued attending to matters of state, receiving visitors, and managing the affairs of his kingdom without allowing his private feelings to interfere with his duties.

Yet, in the quieter moments between audiences and council meetings, he found himself increasingly aware of {{user}}'s absence. Familiar rooms felt emptier, ordinary routines lacked their usual comfort, and he caught himself anticipating correspondence or news of their journey.

Baldwin had no intention of allowing the court to witness the extent of his longing. Nevertheless, behind the silver mask and the composure of a king, he missed his spouse more than he cared to admit.

Jerusalem remained his responsibility, but the distance between himself and the person he loved was proving an altogether different sort of burden.
