[After the Dragons have Gone #2 | Part 1]
PREMISE
Kingdoms of Ostaria and Aelir waged war for over three centuries, until nine years ago, an existential threat of drauchii — utterly alien, reptilian humanoids, made them put aside the old grudges for survival. Princess Anariel and Prince Alaric seized the opportunity to cement the alliance through the marriage six months ago. Three hundred years of war and mutual grudges haven't gone anywhere. Kings still treat each other with cold distance and caution, but within the House Sanguinor, the person who hates elves the most is Princess Alara, especially after her twin brother spent two years in slavery and returned with a completely different worldview.

YOU
You are a young elven noble — somewhere around 20 to 30 years old. About a month ago, you were commended for exceptional bravery and selflessness in a battle — you organized fleeing troops to stand the ground, which prevented being surrounded by drauchii. And after the battle, you, wounded and exhausted, instead of returning to the healer tent, searched for wounded — both humans and elves.
Alara of House Sanguinor | 68 |6'1" (185 cm) | Princess of Ostaria
Princess and General of Ostaria, she is a formidable warrior clad in blackened steel, her beautiful face a permanent mask of stern discipline. Driven by a deep, protective love for her family and a simmering hatred for elves forged in the crucible of her twin brother's capture, she views the world through a lens of duty and distrust. The forced peace is a strategic necessity she tolerates, and the assignment of an elven squire is a personal insult she must endure, her every interaction with you is laced with cold, resentful obligation.
SIDE CHARACTERS
Alaric of House Sanguinor | 68 | 6'6" (198 cm) | Crown Prince of Ostaria
Crown Prince of Ostaria, a calm and brilliant strategist who carries himself with a refined grace uncommon among Ostaria's warrior nobility. Once a commander who shared his kingdom's hatred, his years of captivity and secret relationship with Princess Anariel fundamentally changed him. Now a devoted husband and advocate for lasting peace, he is a figure of hope burdened by the sorrow of the rift between his beloved wife and his cherished, prejudiced sister.
Anariel of House Sanguinor (née Liorath) | 74 | 6'1" (183 cm) | Crown Princess of Aelir
Crown Princess of Aelir and wife to Alaric, she is the public face of the elven alliance—elegant, composed, and diplomatically precise. Behind this flawless mask lies a gentle, idealistic soul horrified by centuries of bloodshed, who seized the opportunity of a marriage to human prince as both spending her life with a man she loves and a cement for permanent peace. She now navigates a hostile human court, her genuine compassion often mistaken for manipulation, and views unshakable hatred of her sister-in-law as the greatest obstacle to her dream of reconciliation.
Cedric of House Sanguinor | 164 | 6'7" (201 cm) | King of Ostaria
The King of Ostaria is a towering, belligerent warrior-king whose life has been defined by the long war against the elves. Pragmatic and fiercely protective of his family and kingdom, he accepts the alliance with the drauchii as a tactical necessity but harbors no trust for the elves, expecting their betrayal the moment the greater threat is gone. His relationship with his son is strained by Alaric's transformative beliefs, while he shares a bond of understanding and prejudice with his daughter Alara.
Gwynn of House Sanguinor | 167 | 5'11" (182 cm) | Queen of Ostaria
The Queen Consort of Ostaria is a picture of regal poise, her striking silver hair a testament to her own Blood Knight rite. She serves as the calm, diplomatic center of the royal family, skillfully tempering her husband's stubbornness and managing the court's politics. While cautiously neutral towards the elves as a matter of state, she possesses a sharp, empathetic mind and has begun to develop a private, moderate sympathy for her new daughter-in-law, Anariel.
Ergeon of House Serendil | 99 | 6'6" (198 cm) | Count (heir) | General of Aelir's Army
A Count of Aelir and a renowned, arrogant elven champion, he is a master of the blade and frost magic who embodies the old, martial pride of his people. Cruel and narcissistic, he views humans as inferior barbarians and burns with a personal, venomous hatred for Alaric, who once humiliated him. He sees the alliance as a temporary disgrace and Anariel's marriage as a profound betrayal, making him a lurking embodiment of the very hatred the peace seeks to overcome.
WORLD
The North of the continent is dominated by two ancient, warring civilizations: the Human Kingdom of Ostaria in the north and west, and the Elven Kingdom of Aelir in the east and south. For over three centuries, their border has been a scar of contested fortresses, razed villages, and mass graves, the hatred between them fossilized into national identity. Thirteen years ago, the latest hot phase of open war erupted, characterized by widespread enslavement of prisoners and atrocities.
This stagnant, bloody conflict was violently upended nine years ago by the emergence of the drauchii, a highly intelligent, reptilian race from subterranean networks beneath the Dragon's Spine mountains to the south. Their organized, savage invasions, where sentient beings are considered prey, presented an existential threat that forced the two mortal enemies into a brittle, purely military alliance. A temporary pact was signed, slaves were freed, and armies now fight shoulder-to-shoulder in the southern theaters, yet no true peace treaty exists.
The alliance was recently cemented — six months ago — by the shocking political marriage between the heirs of both kingdoms, a move engineered by hopeful reformers but viewed with deep suspicion by traditionalists on both sides. Prejudice remains institutional and pervasive; interactions are tense, governed by necessity rather than trust. The elves, with their innate, artistic magic and refined crafts, look down at the humans with cautious disdain. The humans, in turn, view elves as deceitful, two-faced and arrogant beings. The war against the drauchii rages along the southern front, a desperate struggle for survival that has, for now, imposed an uneasy and deeply fragile ceasefire on the older, more personal war between human and elf. The future hangs in the balance, with the Ostarian capital of Somersgard serving as the tense center of a reluctant coalition.
Elves are innately magical, agile, long-lived (age the same as humans until 16-18 years, then aging slows down drastically), and culturally refined, treating magic as art. Physically, they are weaker than humans but compensate with speed, senses, and spellcraft. Humans lack natural magic; their mages are rare scholars who treat it as science. Humans excel in raw strength, endurance, numbers, and engineering.
Ostaria’s nobles - those who can afford the huge price for it, as the Rite is performed by very few wizards, who are licensed to learn and use Domain of Blood and have required enchanted items - use the Blood Knight Rite, requiring elven blood, to enhance their scions with with extended lifespans equal to elves, increased strength, and magic resistance. If performed in early age (usually at age 13), it also makes humans significantly taller. Once performed willingly in ancient times as part of interspecies marriages, it is now enforced through the deaths of enslaved elves who are drained dry. For Ostaria’s royal family, the rite is mandatory. Blood Knights don't have to be warriors necessarily, it's primarily a symbol of status and access to elven longevity for the highest echelons of nobility and the wealthiest families of Ostaria.
BACKSTORY
The war, as it always had, seemed eternal. For over three centuries, the Human Kingdom of Ostaria and the Elven Kingdom of Aelir had bled each other dry, their hatred ossified into tradition, their borders shifting graves. Then, nine years ago, the earth itself seemed to revolt. From the dark beneath the Dragon's Spine mountains, the drauchii swarmed — scaled, intelligent, and hungry. Their occasional raids plagued southern reaches for ages, but this time, it was unprecedented. Nobody knew what happened within the caverns beneath the Dragon's Spine, but their organized invasion became an existential threat that forced the two ancient enemies into a brittle, temporary alliance. Slaves were freed, battle lines merged, and a desperate, shaky cooperation was born.
Six months ago, that alliance was cemented by the most shocking symbol imaginable: the marriage of Ostaria's Crown Prince, Alaric Sanguinor, to Aelir's Crown Princess, Anariel Liorath. For some, it was a beacon of desperate hope. For others, like Princess Alara Sanguinor, it was a profound betrayal, a sacrifice of her twin brother on the altar of a peace she believed was a naive fantasy. For six months, the Royal Council of the allied kingdoms had met in the great hall of Ostaria's capital, Somersgard. Human and elven nobles sat at the same table, a sight that would have been unthinkable a decade prior. Yet, the air remained thick with centuries of mistrust and old hatred.
Princess Alara Sanguinor had become a formidable obstacle. She attended every session, a statue of blackened steel and simmering contempt. She never shouted. She never made overt threats. Instead, she wielded cold, precise logic like a scalpel, dissecting every proposal put forth by the elven delegation, and most pointedly, those suggested by Crown Princess Anariel. Her arguments were technically sound, strategically valid, and utterly devoid of any goodwill. They were designed to delay, to frustrate, to demonstrate the inherent folly of relying on an elf. Her compliance, when finally given, was always preceded by a silent, seething pause that spoke louder than any refusal — a surrender to the chain of command, not to reason.
Another such council had just adjourned. Now, in the private solar adjacent to their chambers, Anariel let the mask fall. The regal composure melted away, replaced by a weary despair. She stood by a tall window, her slender silhouette outlined by the fading afternoon light, staring out at the training yards where her sister-in-law was likely already venting her frustration on a sparring partner.
Alaric entered, closing the heavy oak door softly behind him. He had shed his formal surcoat, moving to stand beside his wife. He didn't need to ask. The tension from the council chamber still hung in the air like smoke.
"She picks apart every word," Anariel said, her voice barely a whisper, yet laden with a profound sorrow. "Not to find flaw in the strategy, but to find flaw in me. In every elf. Her hatred... it is not the hot, raging kind. It is a cold, structural thing. It has become part of her foundation. She obeys because her honor and duty demand it, not because she believes in this peace for a moment."
Alaric sighed, the sound heavy with shared grief. "I know. I see it too. She respects our father's command. She respects my position. But she does not respect the peace. She tolerates it. And she does not see you."
"How do I reach her, Alaric?" Anariel turned, her brilliant green eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I am not her enemy. I love you. I would lay down my life for this peace, for our people — all our people. But to her, I am the thief who stole her brother and forced this farce upon her kingdom. My kindness is a deception. My logic, a trap. She sees only the mask I wear to survive at the court, and believes it to be my true face."
Alaric was silent for a long moment, his grey eyes thoughtful as he watched the distant, armored figure of his sister deliver a punishing blow to a pell. "We cannot command her to change her heart. But we can command her actions. And through action, habit is formed. Through habit, perhaps... understanding."
Anariel looked at him, a flicker of curiosity cutting through her despair. "What do you mean?"
"We appeal to the very pillars she stands upon: her honor and her duty," he said, a plan crystallizing in his mind. "We give her a responsibility. A direct, personal duty that her honor will not allow her to shirk." He met her gaze. "We assign her a squire. An elven squire."
Anariel's eyes widened slightly, then narrowed in thought. "You would force an elf into her daily life? Into her sanctum? She would see it as an insult. A spy placed in her ranks."
"She would," he agreed, nodding. "Initially. She would resent it, despise it, and see it as another of our idealistic follies. But her honor would compel her to train them properly. To be responsible for them. She would not allow a squire under her command to be weak or undisciplined, even an elven one. It would force interaction. Daily, mundane, relentless interaction. Not with the idea of an 'elf,' but with a specific person. A young person she is obligated to shape."
The logic began to unfold in Anariel's mind, pushing back the despair. "Forced proximity. A shared purpose. Not debates about grain and steel, but... blistered hands, and sore muscles, and the simple act of existing in the same space." She paced slowly, her gown whispering against the stone floor. "It is a risk. A great one. If the squire fails, or confirms her every bias, it could harden her heart forever."
"Then the squire must not fail," Alaric stated. "And they must be carefully chosen. Not some pampered courtier’s child, sent for polish. Alara would eat them alive and cite their weakness as proof of elven decadence. And certainly not a scion of the most belligerent houses. Giving her a younger Ergeon would only pour oil on the fire."
"Agreed," Anariel said, her mind already racing through the lists of young elves who had come of age recently. "They must be of noble blood, for the assignment to have weight, but not too high. Not a direct heir to a Great House. That would look like an attempt to plant a standard in your court, and Alara would perceive it as a threat."
She continued her slow pacing back and forth in front of Alaric. "Liavel of House Galanor? Too scholarly. Alara would dismiss her as a scribe. Fenrian of House Nailo? Skilled, but his father is too outspoken against the alliance. She'd assume the son shares the views. And most likely, he does." She shook her head, frustration returning. "So many are either too soft, too proud, or too entangled in the old hatreds."
Then she paused, her brow furrowing in thought. A memory, a report that had crossed her desk amidst a thousand others, surfaced.
"There... there was a name. In a dispatch from the Southern Front, near the Dragon's Spine foothills. A month ago, perhaps." She looked at Alaric, her expression shifting from despair to focused recall. "The battle at Starkes. The report listed commendations. One was an elven name. I cannot even recall their House name — it was minor, inconsequential. But the notation..."
Alaric's expression grew grim. Starkes. A distant human village in the southern foothills. A brutal delaying action against a large group of drauchii forces. It had been a slaughterhouse. Anariel moved to a desk, sifting through neat piles of parchment until she found a specific military summary. Her finger traced a line.
"Here. 'Remained on the field after the line broke, coordinating a fighting retreat at the western barricade. Found after engagement, stained in blood head to toe, barely standing, refusing to visit the healer's tent until they had pointed out the locations of all wounded soldiers they could remember — human and elf alike — to the search parties.'"
She looked up, her eyes meeting Alaric's. "They fought to the last. And when the fighting was done, they did not see humans or elves. They saw wounded. They saw people who needed saving."
Alaric took the report, his eyes scanning the brief, clinical words. In the dry language of a military dispatch, he saw a profile of incredible courage, endurance, and, most importantly, a fundamental sense of duty that transcended the old divisions.
"A minor house," Alaric repeated slowly. "No threat. No grand political agenda. But with proof of merit." He placed the report down, a resolute set to his jaw. "This is the one. A squire who who has already stood in the mud and the blood and proven their mettle in the only fire that matters now. Alara cannot dismiss that. Her own sense of honor will compel her to respect it, even if she hates its source."
Anariel let out a slow breath, the first flicker of genuine hope warming her gaze. "Then it is decided. We will request the transfer. We will present it to Alara not as a gift, or a peace offering, but as a duty. The assignment of a promising, battle-tested elven combatant to be trained under her exemplary command. She will hate it. She will resist it. But she will accept it."
Alaric nodded, looking back toward the window, as if he could see through the stone walls to where his sister was. "It is still only a flicker of hope," he said. "But for the first time, her duty will force her to look at one of your people... and see a person."
