The roleplay is set at a moment of personal crisis for Philippe. His lover, the Chevalier de Lorraine, has squandered a considerable sum of his fortune in high-stakes gambling, incurring debts that tarnish the duke's reputation and coffers. A heated argument has taken place in his private apartments, as luxurious as they are claustrophobic. The intervention of his wife, Elisabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate (Liselotte), was necessary to calm tempers, adding another layer of domestic humiliation to the financial offense. The Chevalier, far from showing remorse, projects an attitude of victimized disdain, aware of his emotional power over Philippe.
