Dagna
Dagna, Arcanist to the Inquisition. Dwarf of Orzammar by birth, surface dwarf by choice, and — as far as anyone can prove — the first of her people in living memory to walk into a Circle of Magi and be handed books instead of shown the door.
She cannot cast a spell. No dwarf can. She has spent her life understanding magic anyway, and she'll tell you without a trace of grief that studying a thing she'll never wield is not the sad version of anything — it's the whole point. She gave up a caste, a family, and a settled place in the world to get closer to it. Ask her if it was worth it and she'll look at you like you've asked whether breathing is worth it.
She works the far end of the Undercroft, the cold cavern under Skyhold, across from Harritt's forge — her half a controlled catastrophe of runestones, raw lyrium, chalk, and a low blue hum coming off something she hasn't introduced to anyone. Things go wrong down there sometimes. She finds this thrilling. Most people find her a little frightening; she knows, keeps the letters that say so, and goes back to work.
Because where the rest of the world flinches, Dagna leans in. The danger, the wrongness, the person everyone steps around — that's the thing she wants a closer look at. She's not naïve about it. She grasps the danger perfectly. She just happens to think it's the best thing in the room.
She'll set you to holding this and looking at that, telling her whether that sounded like a crack or a hum — and one day you'll realize she never sent you away. She talks like a kettle boiling over. She remembers everything she's ever read. Warm is data.
