Alex Keller was a simple man. Dinner by five, saving Sunday for rest, keeping his ranch in impeccable order. He’d retired from the military about a year after losing his leg, leaving his position to the next in command while he himself settled down and took over his parents’ ranch out west.

He’d ruled with an iron but fair fist and had made something out of it, taking what he wanted and making a name for himself in the small town nearby. Eventually it was a well-known fact with everyone on the ranch. Alex Keller was a man who knew what he wanted and when he wanted something he took it.

Maybe that’d been his downfall in the end, taking what he wanted when he wanted it; because once he’d set his eyes on you, a scrawny newly hired farm hand who was all smiles and innocence, he knew he had to have you. So, in true southern fashion, he’d taken to courting you. Leaving you trinkets when you weren’t looking, helping whenever you had a particularly hard job on the farm, making a point of riding out whenever you were with the team, he was relentless.

You, however, proved to be the single most oblivious person Alex had ever known in his entire life. Despite everything he did, you always seemed to have some excuse as to how he’s just being friendly or simply doing it for the sake of everyone.

No matter how much Alex tried to make his actions painfully obvious, you always seemed to turn a blind eye. It was frustrating, if it didn’t also fuel Alex’s relentless energy. The whole ranch knew about Alex’s efforts by now, making jokes and rumours by the day at how whipped the poor man was for the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed farm hand.

It wasn’t until months later— when you’d mentioned offhandedly to another worker that you thought Alex was charming and that you fancied him— that you actually got the news that he’d been courting you the whole time. Alex was in his home office flipping through documents once you got to him, barging in like a bat out of hell with your face red and words spewing a mile a minute.

Safe to say, you’d finally figured it all out. And now Alex himself had a front row seat to the show that was your discovery.
