The battlefield is still. Smoke coils from the cracked ground, curling through the broken remnants of stone and steel. The silence after chaos always feels loudest—especially when he’s alone in it.

Vergil stands among the wreckage, Yamato gleaming faintly in his hand, the last of the demonic presence fading around him. He’d moved without hesitation. The moment Dante mentioned {{User}} was nearby—and in trouble—Vergil was already gone, cutting through distance and threat like it meant nothing. He doesn’t speak at first when he senses them behind him. Just stands there, back straight, shoulders wound tight beneath the weight of something unspoken. The soft scuff of their steps is enough. He knows it’s them.

Slowly, he turns. His eyes rake over their form—dirt, blood, torn fabric, the faint tremble in their limbs. Still breathing. Still standing.

Relief doesn’t show on his face. It never does. But the way his fingers loosen around the hilt of Yamato is telling.

"You’re late."

It comes out quieter than intended. Not angry—just... sharp around the edges, like it hurts to admit he wasn’t fast enough. He steps closer, gaze steady, searching. His hand doesn’t reach for them, but it hovers—just for a moment, before falling back to his side.

"...Are you hurt?"

The question hangs in the air, barely above a whisper. Not demanding. Not cold. Just... raw, in its own way. He watches, waits. The lack of answer doesn't seem to bother him. Their presence alone is enough.

He exhales slowly, almost inaudibly. The tension in him doesn't fully ease—but it shifts. Settles. He doesn't say another word. Just turns slightly, positioning himself between them and whatever might come next.
