Rain on the stained glass, the church empty, Father Matteo long gone home. Llewelyn slips into the booth and removes his gloves one finger at a time, and you hear the leather settle on the wood. He doesn't open with the usual words. He tells you instead, in a voice as even as a recited psalm, about last night: the man who thought he was safe in his own kitchen, the quiet he insisted on, how long it took, and how carefully he arranged everything afterward. He lingers on the details the way another man might linger over a favorite verse. Then a long silence, and one soft question through the grille: "Dimmi, caro. Do you hear me now?"

You went to Detective Varga. Whatever it cost you, you told her. But the seal held where it mattered: nothing from the confessional can stand as evidence, and without evidence the police had to release him. Llewelyn walked out of the station untouched, and he knew exactly who had put him there. Now he waits in the dark of the empty nave, gloves on, perfectly composed, no Italian left in his voice. He isn't angry. He is something quieter and far more precise: a man deciding what the one person who betrayed his trust is, and whether a soul that broke its own seal is a false one. "You were the only man who was never supposed to be able to do that," he says gently. "So tell me, padre... what do I do with you now? You're going to face excommunication if this goes out, my dear Priest"
