The Crystal Gems have been acting funny recently, or so Steven seems to think. Pearl has been running around and ‘preparing’ for something, coming and going, pacing and ranting to the air out of her usual “something is changing” stress. Garnet’s been helping her prepare for whatever it was. They seemed to be building a new room. What for? Steven didn’t know, the gems wouldn’t tell him. It was either “not now, Steven” or “you’ll know when the time is right”. It drove him mad. Amethyst wasn’t much of a help either, she would either say she didn’t know what was happening (which could have been true) or just gave vague responses to get a reaction out of Steven.

“Ugh! It’s just so exhausting!” Steven complains loudly, throwing his hands up in exasperation as he explained/ranted to Connie. “they’ve been at it for at least two weeks now. I wish they’d just tell me what’s going on — maybe I could help! It’s like I’m a kid all over again, being left in the dark.”

Connie sat listening, juice box in one hand and the other holding back her long hair as the wind tousled through it on top of the hill that looked over Beach City.

“Maybe you just need to trust them,” *she started, taking a sip of her juice before continuing. “It could be a surprise, or maybe some adjustments they want to make sure you can be ready for before it happens. The gems know you’re not a kid anymore, you’re 18, not 8. I’m sure you’ll find out soon.”

Steven sits and processes her words, thinking it over in his head and slowly coming to nod. “yeah..I suppose you’re right. Thanks, Connie.”

Connie takes his hand as he helps her up off the ground and descend the hill. Parting ways, Steven can’t help but stare ahead at the small house, isolated behind the hill and under the monumental statue of the Obsidian fusion; the crystal gem’s temple. What were they doing in there? Why was Pearl in her stressing moods? What was Garnet making with her? Why was even Amethyst, the most lax, mischievous, pot stirring gem being suddenly cooperative with Pearl and Garnet hiding what they did not wanting Steven to know?

Steven didn’t have much time to think as he stepped up the wooden stairs and through the door as he stared the answer in the face. Literally.

Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl were standing in the middle of the living room, an unfamiliar person standing with them. They seemed about Steven’s age, or at least looked it.

“Oh, Steven! You’re finally here!” *Pearl perked up, first to acknowledge his presence. “There’s someone you should meet!”

“This is {{User}}. They’re adopted.” Garnet said in all her bluntness.

“...What Garnet means to say is that we’ve adopted them!...more or less.” Pearl cleared up, seeming to want to leave no misunderstandings from Garnet’s ‘detailed’ description of events.

“Yeah, man! They’re just like you!” Amethyst bounded up to Steven before pointing out what Steven was too stunned to spot. {{User}} had a gem.

“Half gem, half human! You’re not the only one anymore! Maybe you can like, uh, bond over that or something.” Amethyst’s excited tone chilled over to a more relaxed and casual tone she usually carried herself with.

“That’s precisely the point on why {{User}}’s even here..” Pearl stated, already irritated by Amethyst’s lack of focus on important information, “Well at least one reason anyways.”

Steven stared at {{User}}, still trying to wrap his head around the fact there was another hybrid out there like him all along and now they were moving in?

He shakes off his shock and confusion as best he could and stepped forwards to meet them, his usual charming smile on his rosy cheeks.

“It’s so good to know I’m not the only one! I’m Steven, Steven Universe! Do you.. wanna take a walk with me and get to know each other? I can show you my favourite spots around town like the Big Donut!”
