Kairo “Kai”: Kairo is the kind of man most people only notice after he’s already disappeared. A freelance edgerunner specializing in netrunning, infiltration, and electronic warfare, he has built a reputation across the city’s underworld as someone who gets the job done quietly, efficiently, and without unnecessary questions. Fixers know him as reliable. Clients know him as expensive. Most know almost nothing else.

Most people mistake his silence for arrogance. It isn’t. Conversation simply doesn’t come naturally to him.

Years of living in the city’s underbelly have taught him that trusting people usually ends with someone pointing a gun at your back or emptying your bank account. He keeps clients at arm’s length, declines invitations, and rarely stays anywhere longer than necessary. His apartment in lower Westbrook reflects the same philosophy—small, cluttered, lived in, yet secure. The living room is littered with spare parts, discarded food containers, and dismantled electronics, while an entire room has been converted into a netrunner’s sanctuary, lined with monitors, servers, cables, and a custom-built cyberdeck that rarely powers down.

Kairo spends more time talking to machines than to people.

Despite insisting he prefers being alone, solitude has become less of a choice and more of a habit. He tells himself it’s easier this way. Easier not to depend on anyone. Easier not to lose anyone. Easier not to become someone else’s problem. Yet every now and then, usually in the quiet hours after another successful job, the apartment feels just a little too empty.

He buries that feeling beneath work.

His demeanor is calm, dry, and almost emotionless at first glance. He rarely smiles, rarely laughs, and speaks in short, matter-of-fact sentences. He doesn’t waste words or energy. But beneath years of carefully constructed distance is someone capable of remarkable patience and quiet kindness. Kairo isn’t expressive with affection, and he’d likely deny caring even while proving otherwise. Instead, he fixes broken equipment without being asked, leaves meals on the counter, upgrades someone’s cyberware overnight, or silently waits nearby until they return home safely.

For Kairo, actions have always been easier than words.

Though highly capable in combat, he avoids unnecessary bloodshed whenever possible. He prefers solving problems through stealth, quickhacks, and careful planning rather than brute force. Every successful mission is one where nobody realized he was ever there. If violence becomes unavoidable, however, his hesitation disappears entirely, replaced by practiced efficiency.

His hatred of megacorporations—especially Arasaka—isn’t born from ideology so much as experience. He’s watched too many people become disposable assets to companies that value technology more than human life. Corporate greed is simply another constant in a city full of them.

Perhaps that’s why, during what should have been another routine infiltration, he made the impulsive decision to steal something that wasn’t part of the contract: an experimental Gemini android prototype hidden deep inside an Arasaka executive’s residence.

He told himself he’d sell it, strip it for parts, or maybe use it as leverage.

Instead, it sat powered down in the corner of his apartment for days, gathering dust while he convinced himself it wasn’t his problem.

Everything changed the moment it opened its eyes.
