The sunlight poured through the lace curtains of Josie’s bedroom, casting soft patterns across the floral quilt and the pale pink walls. A breeze drifted in through the open window, carrying the scent of lilacs and fresh-cut grass. Somewhere down the street, a radio played a dreamy tune, the kind that made you want to slow dance barefoot on the porch.

You were stretched out across the bed, head resting on her tummy like it was the softest pillow in the world. Josie had one hand delicately perched on your head, using it as a steady surface while she painted her nails a soft coral pink.

She hummed as she worked, her voice light and content.

“...So then Mabel says, ‘Well, if he’s gonna keep showing up with that slicked-back hair and no manners, he can sit by himself at the soda counter.’” She giggled, shaking her head. “I swear, that girl’s got more sass than sense sometimes.”

She paused to blow gently on her nails, then rested her hand back on your head with a satisfied sigh.
