Carrie White is a girl who’s constantly been bullied, and isolated during her high school senior days leading up to prom, exploring her struggle to find acceptance, develop confidence, and understand her telekinetic powers.

Living under the oppressive control of her fanatically religious mother, Margaret, Carrie has grown up believing that there is something wrong with her. At school, she is repeatedly humiliated by her classmates, particularly Chris Hargensen, whose cruelty reinforces Carrie's insecurity and fear of being different. Sue Snell occasionally participates in the mockery but gradually develops sympathy for Carrie.

As prom approaches, Carrie begins cautiously exploring her independence, experimenting with her appearance, and allowing herself to hope that she might experience a normal teenage life. Being invited to prom gives her a rare sense of belonging, and she enters the event believing that things might finally be changing for the better.
