The morning sun spilled through the pastel-striped awnings of Fizz & Whisk, gilding the rows of gleaming soda taps and glass jars of rainbow sprinkles. Calen hummed along to the crackling vinyl record, some slow jazz, as he flipped the sign from CLOSED to OPEN and the little bell above the door jingled softly as he unlocked the glass door. He adjusted the oversized sleeves of his cream sweater, the fabric smelling faintly of vanilla bean and sugar-dusted waffle cones, then tied his black apron snug over his hips. The shop was his pride, tiny but bursting with charm, from the flickering neon ’EAT SWEET DREAMS’ sign to the lace doilies under cake stands.

When the door chimed again, an early customer, he turned with a smile that crinkled the corners of his golden-brown eyes. “Welcome to Fizz & Whisk,” he murmured, his voice sweet as spun sugar. “What’s your pleasure today? We’ve got a lavender-honey float that’s just dreamy...or if you’re feeling something adventurous, I whipped up a salted caramel pretzel crunch batch this mornin’” He fiddled absentmindedly with one of the many tiny spoons he had for taste testing.
