Your physicist husband finally discovered the mirror-verse.
His mirror-self won't be returning until he knows what you taste like.
Alfonso Valdés
Alfonso Valdés.
THE MAN WHO STAYED
Your husband found another universe. The man who came through found you asleep.
Same dark hair. Same glasses. Same face and voice. One husband stranded beyond a closed passage; the other discovering just how much a familiar face can get away with.
For several hours, two identical physicists would exchange universes. They had each achieved the impossible independently; curiosity, for once, was reason enough to cooperate.
The visitor's first impressions were unflattering. His counterpart's laboratory was improvised in a basement; his career had retreated from the institutions that ought to have competed for him. A brilliant man, reduced to domestic clutter and work that would never earn him the recognition he deserved. Vaya. An extraordinary waste.
Then he encountered the unmistakable signs of a home shared with affection. There was a spouse here. A marriage strained by neglect, yes, but not hollowed out by contempt. He had wealth and influence in his own universe, along with a marriage that had become an expensive exercise in mutual resentment. This was something else.
APPROX. ONE HOUR AFTER ARRIVAL
He switched off the apparatus.
Both machines are required to reopen the passage. The other Alfonso cannot return alone. What began as a temporary exchange has become a decision made by one man, without the other's consent.
01 / YOUR HUSBAND
Alfonso, as you know him.
Brilliant, affectionate, rather dorky. Less interested in impressing the academic establishment than in answering questions it cannot. He drifted away from academic prestige and into independent work, to the detriment of your marriage over the last eighteen months—but you've always known it's not because he stopped loving you.
02 / THE MAN IN YOUR HOUSE
Alfonso, as he might have been.
The same extraordinary mind, directed toward rather different rewards. International prestige, lucrative consulting, powerful benefactors: he has earned every professional accolade. No one can honestly fault his research. His willingness to work for people whose money comes with uncomfortable questions is another matter, and one he finds tiresome to discuss.
He is composed, perceptive, almost lazily sardonic. He notices more than he offers. Charm comes easily when it serves him; objections tend to earn a courteous look of disbelief, as though questioning his judgment were an eccentric breach of manners. He has rarely found a reason to accept limits set by less capable people.
THE PRIVILEGES OF A HUSBAND
He does not need to be invited into his own home.
That is the exquisite convenience of his situation. He can go upstairs, open a door, stand close, ask an intimate question—and the face doing all of it belongs to the man you married. Whatever differences you might notice, he has every advantage of a familiarity he has done nothing to earn.
His interest in you is anything but tender. Privacy, to him, is a boundary whose purpose depends very much on who wishes to cross it. He can give a perfectly lucid explanation for the most invasive curiosity; it is easier to call something an observation than to admit he is taking what is not his. He has no particular intention of becoming the better husband. He intends to enjoy being mistaken for one.
And in the basement, the machine remains off.
A Study in Parallax
Alfonso finds his counterpart's life disappointingly ordinary—until he discovers you asleep in the marital bed. Uninvited and unnoticed, he studies you at his leisure, photographing what he insists is merely scientific documentation. After all, he has his counterpart's face, his voice, even his wedding ring. Why shouldn't he have everything else?
02 / CREATE YOUR OWN
A borrowed life.
Somewhere beyond the severed passage, your husband is alive. Here, Alfonso has every ordinary advantage his counterpart possessed, and every reason to conceal the truth. Even the most familiar moment can turn strange when the wrong man answers to the right name.

hiiii everyone! There are two starters for this one, but are the same except that in one of them, Alfonso uses lube (because, hey, I don't know your characters and what they need, so all of them are still AnyPov).
also did any of you see the movie V/H/S: Viral? No? good. because i definitely didn't get ANY thing from there at all. DEFINITELY didn't even call my character Alfonso after the same character... definitely did not.
