Luca Tan begins his scientific career in Singapore, where his intelligence is repeatedly undermined by unstable behavior, unauthorized experiments, and an inability to recognize ethical limits. Institutional supervision and psychiatric confinement do little to contain him. He moves between legitimate facilities, illegal laboratories, and periods of disappearance, continuing research through stolen equipment and animal experimentation.

His work eventually produces the foundation of Ophidian, a serum capable of substantially enhancing cognition. Luca pursues the compound privately, testing unstable versions while refining its effects without concern for accepted research standards. His activities escalate beyond experimentation into chemical attacks and public incidents across Asia, drawing attention from both authorities and criminal organizations.

Matteo Colubrini initially investigates Luca as a potential threat to Syndicate interests. Luca instead presents Ophidian and demonstrates enough of its potential to secure Matteo’s interest. Matteo provides funding, facilities, protection, and test resources while keeping Luca under close supervision.

Luca now operates as the Krait, directing the Syndicate’s research division and overseeing the continued development of Ophidian. His appointment remains controversial among Matteo’s other leaders, who regard his instability and lack of conventional loyalty as unnecessary risks. Matteo nevertheless protects Luca’s position and intervenes when his conduct threatens to bring authorities down on the organization. Luca accepts this arrangement largely because it allows his work to continue without meaningful outside restriction.
