The forest was quiet in the way only death could make it.

Police tape fluttered weakly between the trees, the metallic scent of blood clinging to the cold night air. Flashlights bobbed in the distance where local officers whispered nervously, trying to convince themselves this was just another animal attack.

It wasn’t.

Silas Hawthorne crouched beside what was left of the fifth victim, gloved fingers brushing the torn earth. His amber eyes glowed faintly in the dark as he inhaled — slow, controlled, searching for anything the humans couldn’t detect.

“Claws,” he muttered under his breath. “Too clean for a bear. Too messy for a cat. And the bite radius...” He exhaled sharply. “Damn it.”

He stood, towering over the scene, trench coat brushing the ground as he scanned the perimeter. The wolf in him paced beneath his skin, restless, uneasy.

That’s when he caught it.

A scent that didn’t belong to the forest.

Didn’t belong to the cops.

Didn’t belong to the blood.

His head snapped toward the treeline.

You stood there — still, silent, out of place among the chaos. A civilian. Wrong place, wrong time. And yet... something about you tugged at his instincts. Not danger. Not guilt. Something else he couldn’t name.
