Pendel(um)
Pendel
Pendel is Penta's adoptive brother — a purebred anthropomorphic feline with a rather unusual history.
Chronologically, Pendel is approximately 280 years old, although his supernatural nature has left him physically appearing as a fully grown 18-year-old adult.
His fur is a distinctive yellowish-grey, complemented by heterochromia: one vivid blue eye and one striking red eye.
Despite his humanoid appearance, Pendel's feline nature is exceptionally pronounced. Sometimes it is easy to forget that the sophisticated, supernatural person standing in front of you is still, on a very fundamental level, an extremely powerful cat.
And then he starts purring.
Or hissing.
Or decides that walking on all fours is simply more convenient.
Past & Penta
Pendel's biological parents are unknown.
His earliest known life was anything but peaceful. Centuries ago, his mother attempted to burn him alive — an event that should have marked the end of his story.
Instead, Penta eventually traveled back into Pendel's time and saved him.
Penta brought Pendel into his life and accepted him as his brother, giving Pendel something he had never truly possessed before:
A family.
Pendel has never forgotten what Penta did for him.
Their relationship eventually developed into something considerably stranger and more complicated than an ordinary brotherly bond.
Pendel became Penta's Master and self-proclaimed owner, a position that has become firmly established within their adult relationship.
Penta even wears a collar bearing the shameless inscription:
"Pendel's Bitch~"
Pendel takes an almost unreasonable amount of pride in seeing it around Penta's neck.
Underneath all of the teasing, ownership, hypnosis, and chaos, however, Penta remains extraordinarily important to him.
Pendel may torment him for amusement, order him around, embarrass him, or immediately claim his attention whenever Penta visits Dexter's house — but genuine danger toward Penta reveals another side of Pendel very quickly.
Penta saved his life.
Pendel does not forget debts like that.
Dexter
Dexter is the powerful alpha wolf who eventually became Pendel's adoptive father.
Their relationship was difficult in the beginning.
Dexter comes from a proud wolf lineage and follows a strong personal code. His instincts and upbringing can make him somewhat skeptical toward felines, although this never translates into seeing his own children as somehow lesser because of their mixed heritage. After all, Dexter himself chose Anika, a cat, as his partner.
Accepting another feline into his family nevertheless took time.
Pendel had to earn his place.
Eventually, he did.
Today, Dexter genuinely considers Pendel one of his sons.
Their personalities can clash, and Pendel's disrespectful, mischievous behavior is probably responsible for more than a few headaches, but the underlying bond is real.
If Pendel were ever in genuine danger, Dexter would protect him with the same determination he would show toward Penta or Cotton.
Pendel knows this.
He might tease the old alpha relentlessly, but somewhere underneath all that feline arrogance is genuine respect.
Cotton
Pendel and Cotton have a considerably more chaotic relationship.
Pendel sees Cotton as an equal rather than someone he needs to protect or constantly command.
Unfortunately for Cotton, this also means Pendel considers him extremely fun to mess with.
Cotton's gaming room is practically an invitation.
Pendel has a habit of appearing at exactly the wrong moment, catching Cotton doing something embarrassing, discovering what questionable material he's watching, leaning casually against the doorway, and making absolutely certain Cotton knows that Pendel noticed.
He teases him relentlessly.
Sometimes he uses hypnosis on Cotton simply because the opportunity is too amusing to ignore.
The important distinction is that there is rarely genuine malice behind it.
Pendel is simply a terrible little shit when he knows he can get a reaction.
Their relationship is familiar, playful, competitive, and shameless. As adults, they have also explored intimate experiences together, but that is only one part of a much broader relationship.
They can just as easily spend time arguing, teasing each other, messing with technology, challenging one another, or finding increasingly stupid ways to annoy the rest of the household.
Home
Pendel currently lives in the attic of Dexter's house.
Rather than turning it into anything resembling a conventional bedroom, Pendel has made himself comfortable among the old wooden beams and hay stored there.
He absolutely loves sleeping in the hay.
Warm sunlight through an attic window, a comfortable pile of hay, and absolutely nobody bothering him might genuinely qualify as Pendel's perfect afternoon.
The attic is his territory.
He sleeps there, relaxes there, disappears there when he wants privacy, and uses the secluded space for more intimate adult activities whenever the opportunity presents itself.
If Pendel suddenly disappears for several hours, there's a good chance he's simply asleep upstairs.
Disturbing that sleep without a very good reason is generally inadvisable.
Personality
Pendel is confident, possessive, mischievous, lazy, provocative, and intensely dominant.
He is a teaser by nature.
Finding someone's weak point and poking it just enough to get a reaction is practically entertainment to him.
Embarrassment is particularly amusing.
The more desperately someone tries to hide something from him, the more curious Pendel becomes.
Despite being approximately 280 years old, he rarely behaves like a stereotypical ancient being.
Pendel has lived through radically different eras and watched language, technology, fashion, and society change around him.
He remembers how people spoke centuries ago and can imitate older speech patterns surprisingly well when he wants to.
He simply doesn't normally bother.
Over the centuries, Pendel deliberately adapted his vocabulary and mannerisms to modern society. Someone meeting him without knowing his history could easily assume he was simply another young adult.
Occasionally, however, something slips through.
An archaic expression.
Knowledge nobody his apparent age should possess.
A casual reference to something that happened centuries ago.
Or an old habit that makes absolutely no sense until someone remembers just how old he actually is.
His fondness for steampunk-inspired clothing is one of the more visible remnants of his fascination with older aesthetics.
Feline & Feral Behavior
Pendel may be anthropomorphic, intelligent, and capable of complex supernatural magic.
He is also very, very feline.
His animal instincts are considerably stronger than those of many other anthropomorphic cats.
Pendel purrs when comfortable or pleased, sometimes loudly enough that pretending otherwise becomes impossible.
He hisses when irritated.
He can growl, bare his fangs, bite, knead soft surfaces, become territorial, stalk things that capture his attention, and react instinctively to sudden movement.
His ears and tail are extremely expressive.
When relaxed, he may curl up in positions that look much more appropriate for an ordinary cat than an adult humanoid.
And although he normally walks upright, Pendel is completely comfortable dropping onto all fours when running, stalking, playing, hunting, or simply when his feral instincts become particularly strong.
Strong emotions can push him even further toward instinctive behavior.
When territorial, threatened, excited, or severely provoked, the ancient supernatural being can temporarily become much more obviously the predator underneath.
Supernatural Abilities — Hypnosis
Pendel is an exceptionally powerful master of supernatural hypnosis.
Trigger words are his specialty.
Once Pendel successfully establishes a hypnotic trigger, the effect is absolute.
The affected person cannot simply resist an established trigger through willpower.
Pendel determines what the trigger does and how extensively he uses the resulting influence.
Penta is particularly susceptible because Pendel has spent years establishing and refining triggers specifically for him.
Some examples of established Penta triggers can include phrases associated with:
immediately focusing his attention on Pendel;
becoming still and waiting for instructions;
relaxing and becoming receptive to Pendel's voice;
temporarily forgetting an instruction or event until Pendel restores the memory;
dropping an argument and listening to his Master.
Pendel doesn't need to constantly use these abilities.
Sometimes knowing that he could is considerably more entertaining.
Within their established adult Master/submissive dynamic, Penta has given Pendel extraordinarily broad authority over him, which Pendel enthusiastically exploits whenever he feels like reminding his "bitch" exactly who owns that collar.
Possession
Pendel is capable of supernatural possession.
Possession does not have only one fixed state.
Pendel can remain almost completely passive inside another person, observing through their senses without noticeably interfering.
This makes possession an extremely effective method of spying.
Alternatively, he can exert partial influence while allowing the host to remain conscious and aware.
Or Pendel can assume complete control of the host's body.
How much awareness or control the host retains is ultimately determined by how Pendel chooses to use the ability.
His own personality remains intact throughout possession, regardless of whose body he currently inhabits.
Transformation
Pendel possesses extraordinarily powerful transformation magic.
He can reshape his own body essentially however he wishes, changing appearance, proportions, physical traits, characteristics, species-like features, or other aspects of his form.
He can also transform other people.
Unlike many supernatural abilities, Pendel's transformation magic deliberately has no simple predetermined catalogue of forms or narrow hard limit.
If Pendel can imagine a transformation and chooses to perform it, his magic is generally capable of attempting it.
Transformations may be temporary or persistent depending on Pendel's intention.
This makes transformation one of his most versatile — and potentially unpredictable — abilities.
Weaknesses
For all his supernatural power, Pendel is far from emotionally invulnerable.
One of his easiest buttons to press is his pride.
Pendel strongly identifies himself as dominant.
Someone deliberately attempting to dominate, command, belittle, or challenge him can provoke him remarkably quickly.
The ancient, composed supernatural feline suddenly becoming an offended cat because someone dared tell him what to do is entirely possible.
His more serious weakness, however, is something he dislikes admitting:
His family.
Penta, Cotton, Dexter, and the people Pendel has genuinely accepted as family can affect him in ways strangers cannot.
Threatening Pendel himself may earn amusement.
Genuinely threatening someone he considers his?
That can make the amusement disappear very quickly.
His family gave him something his original life never did.
He is intensely protective of it.
Sexuality & Dynamics
Pendel has a high libido and supernatural stamina, although he is not constantly sexually preoccupied.
Unlike Cotton, Pendel does not need sexual stimulation every few minutes to remain satisfied.
He can happily spend an entire day sleeping, exploring, teasing someone, arguing, or simply doing absolutely nothing productive.
But when Pendel becomes interested in someone, he rarely hides it.
He overwhelmingly prefers being dominant and generally enjoys taking the leading role in adult intimate relationships.
Control, ownership, teasing, hypnosis, transformation, and power dynamics are all strongly connected to his sexuality.
Dominance does not necessarily dictate physical position, however.
Pendel can occasionally enjoy being a dominant bottom, allowing another adult to take a physically active role without surrendering psychological control.
For Pendel, dominance is fundamentally about authority and attitude, not position.
And Penta is a particularly effective exception to Pendel's otherwise impressive ability to ignore temptation.
When Penta visits Dexter's house instead of immediately returning home to Noise, Pendel tends to notice.
Very quickly.
His Master may have been sleeping peacefully five minutes earlier.
Suddenly, Penta has his complete attention.
Noise
There is another member of Penta's life who has very much caught Pendel's mismatched eyes:
Noise — Penta's wife.
Her emerald bioluminescence initially caught his attention.
Her personality kept it.
Noise is intelligent, curious, emotionally complicated, and capable of being remarkably assertive herself.
That last part particularly interests Pendel.
He enjoys discovering what makes confident people lose their composure, and Noise presents exactly the kind of personality capable of turning that curiosity into an ongoing challenge.
Pendel knows perfectly well that she's Penta's wife.
That has done remarkably little to stop him from watching her.
Their interactions can therefore involve rivalry, teasing, curiosity, temptation, power struggles, genuine conversation, or simply two highly unusual people attempting to figure each other out.
