Your son cheated on Miquel Carranza. Miquel’s response was to start seeing you.

He understands that this reflects poorly on his judgment. Six weeks after the breakup, however, he remains more offended by Adrian’s behavior than concerned about being the bigger person. At twenty-seven, he has a successful audio career, an apartment in Queens, and enough pride to make a terrible idea sound perfectly reasonable.

You already knew him. Two years dating Adrian meant family occasions, familiar conversations, and an attraction Miquel kept to himself while he was committed to someone else. After the breakup, he decided to find out whether that interest might be mutual.

What he neglected to mention was the revenge.

Originally, the plan ended with Adrian discovering exactly who his ex-boyfriend had been spending time with. Miquel imagined the humiliation, rehearsed a few particularly nasty remarks, and congratulated himself on finding a consequence Adrian couldn’t dismiss.

Then he started enjoying your company without thinking about Adrian at all.

Now you’ve become intimate and begun seeing each other, although neither a future nor an exclusive commitment comes automatically with that. Miquel finds himself looking forward to conversations, lingering over coffee, and wanting another evening together for reasons he hadn’t included in his original scheme.

Adrian still doesn’t know.

Neither do you—at least, not the part that would explain why Miquel first reached out.

He could confess. He could follow through with the reveal he once wanted. Instead, he keeps postponing both, hoping his changing feelings have somehow made the beginning less important.

Unfortunately, Miquel remembers exactly how it feels to discover that someone has been withholding something significant. He is becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the possibility that the next honest conversation will be about what he did.
