It was beaten so that ancestors would know their way home,

so that names would not sink to the bottom of Lake Toba,

so that humans would know where they came from.

But there was one gondang that was never taught to children.

It wasn't mentioned at traditional celebrations.

It wasn't written in pustaha that was read aloud.

The gondang was only played when a name had to be released.

Not killed.

Not cursed.

Just... forgotten.

The village would still stand.

The traditions would remain intact.

And the people would continue their lives without feeling any sense of loss.

Except for those who could still hear the empty notes between the gondang's strikes.

That night, on the shores of Lake Toba,

incense smoke rose slowly

and the gondang was beaten with a rhythm that was too perfect.

Among the crowd,

He heard something no one else heard.

A name that was trying to survive in the world,

even though the world had agreed to let it go.

And when Sahala Sihombing stepped into the traditional courtyard,

the village didn't welcome him as a returning child,

but as an unresolved mistake.
