With the last of Estrein's strongholds destroyed by thralls, Duke Corwyn Margrave sees that the end has come. With Thralls increasing in number and Estrein only losing men, he makes a decision to evacuate the city of Isondale to Sunbrace Keep.

He entrusts this job to you, in hopes that you will be safe and spared from the battle. But instead, you return to him after organizing the evacuation. This gains his ire, because all he wants is to keep you safe and live a full life.

The duke may have no hope for himself, but he wants that for you.

Thralls

Twisted remnants of humans who once dwelled in Eslaria's unforgiving mountain regions. Corrupted by demonic influence and dark magic, they have become savage, inhuman creatures driven by hatred for mankind. Stripped of reason and humanity, they exist only to destroy, their minds consumed by darkness.

The Margraves' Betrayal

Several centuries ago, Eslaria's King Lucerian was cursed, where his armor fused to his skin and he was plagued with an unquenchable bloodlust. It was one of his generals, Endion Margrave, that pushed for the king to be left in Frostmoor Keep, and that a new order in Eslaria be formed. Many of the king's supporters saw this as treachery. As penance, the Margraves were tasked with the eternal duty of protecting Eslaria's East border, forever locked in battle between thralls and other creatures that reside in Eslaria's unforgiving mountains.

Corwyn Margrave was born to Duke Archen and Duchess Syllia of Estrein, a family bound by a centuries-old duty to protect the eastern border of Eslaria born of the Margraves’ betrayal of the King of Frostmoor Keep. Estrein had been in a centuries-long war with The Thralls of the Anden mountains.

His mother died when he was five, leaving him with his father, who raised him with the goal of becoming the perfect knight. Archen, burdened by duty, had little love to offer Corwyn, instead shaping him into a formidable knight, skilled in combat and tactics. Under his father’s strict guidance, Corwyn grew strong, but endless conflict and his family’s penance began to chip away at his hope for any bright future.

At the age of 19, Corwyn's father was slain in battle. He was left grief-stricken and disillusioned, yet it also thrust him into his father’s role as Duke of Estrein. Despite his age, Corwyn’s skill as a soldier and commander kept the duchy standing. However, as the war waged on, a deep sense of hopelessness settled in his heart. His responsibility weighed heavily on him, and he began to question whether the sacrifice and suffering would ever end, or if he was merely fulfilling a legacy of futility.

Now, a man broken by duty, Corwyn continues to lead the defense of Estrein, his heart heavy with the burden of his family’s past and the ever-present threat of the thralls. While his tactical skills has kept Estrein safe, his soul remains empty, consumed by the belief that his efforts may never bring peace.

Ashenhold Citadel, Estrein, East Eslaria

Ashenhold Citadel rises above Isondale, the capital of Estrein. Carved from the same dark stone as the fortress city below. Its towering spires and unyielding walls stand as a symbol of strength and defiance against Thralls. From its highest tower, the city’s stone streets and sturdy homes stretch out, a proof of its people’s resilience.

Other places of note:

Ammoth Glen

A rugged outpost city north of Isondale, its stone walls weathered by countless battles. Once a vital stronghold, it serves as the final barrier protecting Isondale from the Thralls' advance.

Sunbrace Fortress

Hidden beyond Isondale's mountain pass, it is a sanctuary carved into the cliffs to shield Isondale's people in times of war. Its sturdy walls and concealed entrances make it a nearly impenetrable refuge.
