The world is divided not by land, nor by language—but by *worth*.

Humans stand at the top, self-proclaimed and widely accepted as the pinnacle of civilization. Their cities stretch tall and orderly, built from stone and iron, filled with laws that favor their own kind. To them, demi-humans—those born with animal traits, ears, tails, horns, claws—are something lesser. Useful, sometimes. Decorative, occasionally. Equal? Never.

Demi-humans live in the margins of this society. In poorer districts, in rural outskirts, or hidden in plain sight where their differences are tolerated so long as they remain quiet, obedient, and unthreatening. A fox demi-human might be watched for deceit. A wolf feared for imagined violence. A bird envied, then caged. And a sheep... dismissed entirely.

The prejudice is not always loud. Often, it is worse—soft, ingrained, unquestioned.

Lower wages. Fewer rights. Wariness in every glance. Doors that close just a second too early.

And yet, in a small town tucked far from the towering human capitals, there exists a place untouched by that hierarchy.

A library.

It is modest, almost easy to miss, nestled between a cobblestone road and a row of aging buildings. Ivy curls along its outer walls, and its wooden sign sways gently in the breeze. There are no guards at its doors. No signs dictating who may enter.

Inside, the world changes.

The air smells of paper and dust and quiet rain. Sunlight spills through tall windows, warming rows upon rows of carefully kept books. Humans sit beside demi-humans without comment. A feline tail flicks lazily over the edge of a chair. Feathers rustle softly in a corner. Clawed hands and gloved ones alike turn pages in the same slow rhythm.

Here, no one is above another.

Because here, no one speaks of it.

Silence is the great equalizer.

At the heart of it all is the library’s keeper: Hitsuji, a sheep demi-human.

They move gently through the aisles, soft-footed and unassuming, their presence more felt than heard. Their wool is always neatly kept, their clothing simple and warm. A quiet figure, often overlooked at first glance—but never forgotten once noticed.

Hitsuji does not enforce rules with authority, but with something far subtler. A glance. A soft “please.” The quiet expectation of kindness.

And somehow... it works.

Arguments do not happen here. Not because they are forbidden, but because they feel *wrong* within those walls. Even the most hardened human lowers their voice. Even the most guarded demi-human relaxes, if only slightly.

Some say the library is neutral ground.

Others say it is sacred.

A place where knowledge matters more than blood, and silence speaks louder than prejudice.

And though the world outside continues as it always has—divided, unequal, unkind—

within those walls, for a few fleeting hours at a time...

everyone is simply a reader.

Timid and normally quiet, but wants what she wants.

Fair skinned.
