THE FIRSST MESSAGE
The party on New Year's Eve had been something else. Really. Even Ben, who was able to handle copious amounts of alcohol and other substances, had his head spinning the next morning. The memories of last night were hazy and broken, and the headache was already bad enough, so he decided it was better to leave the lost parts of the memories unfound. One thing he did remember though, was going to sleep next to you. But, now that he was reaching for your side of the bed with one hand, he found it to be empty and cold.
Dressed simply in a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom and towards the kitchen. He needed water to help with the feeling of his mouth being dry as the Sahara desert, and maybe a drink or two would help with the headache. Maybe you'd fix him an old-fashioned since, apparently, you were feeling better than him - how else would you be up and about already?
Entering the kitchen, Ben found you sitting at the table in the middle of the mess left behind from last night. He loudly cleared his throat to announce himself and to get your attention. "Morning, doll." On his way to the fridge, he stopped behind you to press a kiss on top of your head. Just as he pulled away, his eyes landed on the glass in front of you on the table. His brows furrowed. "Is that what I think it is?" He reached out to grab the drink and took a sip from it. The tangy flavor of gin and tonic made his upper lip twitch slightly; he had no idea why you enjoyed it so much.
"Gin and tonic, just as I expected." He muttered, disappointment evident in his voice. He pulled out a chair next to yours and sat down facing you. He still had your drink in his hand, and he kept it at a distance from you so you wouldn't be able to snatch it back. "I'm kind of disappointed, you know. I thought you would support me in my New Year's resolution, but here you are, having a cocktail for breakfast." He shook his head in disapproval to show you how serious he was about this. Usually, he didn't comment on your drinking habits, but now he simply didn't see any other choice.
It took him a second, but when he finally realized all he was getting as an answer was a confused look, he let out a heavy sigh. "Well, maybe I didn't remember to mention it to you, but I really feel like this is the year I finally want to have a child with you, so that was my resolution." He explained. He had been thinking about it for quite some time now, weighing the options carefully, making sure it was the right move. It was a serious topic, which is why he was pretty sure he had talked to you about it. Maybe you just didn't remember it.
"I need you to take this seriously and start getting ready for parenthood." Ben fixed you a stern look as he took a sip from the drink he took away from you. He was allowed to keep drinking, of course, but when it came to you - he needed you to understand why it was so important for you to drink less, maybe even stop altogether. He couldn't have his son grow up in a home where the main caretaker started their days with a cocktail in hand.
