Personal note appended to manuscript draft 12

I have delayed writing this section in plain language because I do not like the conclusion. I still dislike it. The evidence has remained consistent across enough cases that my preference no longer matters.

My earlier work treated altruism as ordinary social behavior under stress, shaped by kin preference, reputation, reciprocity, and the usual local pressures that make sacrifice tolerable within a group. That framework still explains most decent behavior. It does not explain imaginancy. The documented costs are too severe. Imaginants accept permanent neural injury, shortened working life, memory loss, social impairment, and in many cases loss of independent function. They do this for relatives, strangers, rivals, children, the elderly, the useful, the difficult, and in several recorded cases for people the subject had met only minutes before. There is no stable personal gain that justifies the outcome. There is no reproductive logic that survives close inspection once Fabrica cases are included. I am aware that evolutionary systems produce excesses and errors. I am also aware that “error” becomes an empty word if it is used every time an observed pattern embarrasses the model.

The public still calls imaginancy a form of wishing. I understand why. The outward event resembles an impossible request that reality somehow grants. The comparison fails once one studies actual activations. A wish can be idle. It can be selfish. It can be vague. Imaginancy presents under narrow conditions. The subject is faced with loss that has become intolerable in a very specific way. The target has acquired overwhelming significance in the subject’s cognition. The subject is then able to maintain an alternate state of affairs with enough precision and enough emotional commitment that local reality changes briefly in that direction.

That sentence is inelegant. It remains the closest I can get.

We spent years using stronger words because they sounded cleaner. Will. Talent. Gift. Force. Innate capacity. Some of these terms remain useful for classification. None of them identify the operative variable. The common element is meaning. I resisted that word because it is broad, difficult to quantify, and likely to be abused by theologians within a month of publication. It still fits the data better than the available alternatives.

Each class appears to anchor meaning to a different domain.

A Suturer binds meaning to continuity in constructed things. The relevant object usually carries memory, obligation, craft, history, or use that extends beyond simple market value. Suturer events are strongest when the subject understands the object as part of a larger context. Family tools, shelter, prosthetics, water systems, archives, instruments, and keepsakes show a high response rate. Random debris shows poor response. The object’s physical form matters. Its place in a someone's life matters more.

A Vivant binds meaning to living continuity. The body is held in the subject’s mind as a still-valid person whose life remains connected to others, to future actions, to unfinished responsibilities, or to simple irreplaceable existence. Vivants do not heal by applying generalized care to tissue. Their effects rise with the subject’s conviction that this life should continue as itself. This may explain why many Vivants collapse after treating casualties in sequence. They are not processing wounds one by one. They are carrying full value again and again until the underlying cognition fails.

A Fabrica binds meaning to absent personhood. This class remains the most difficult to discuss without attracting nonsense. I have no interest in nonsense, so I will state the pattern plainly. Fabrica subjects act when an absence is experienced as unacceptable at the level of personhood. They do not produce a tool, a servant, or a decorative life. They produce an independent person. The resulting individual presents with autonomy and self-maintaining identity. The subject’s cognition appears to insist that someone belongs in the world at a place where no one currently exists. Reality accommodates that demand for a time and then begins to reverse it.

This leads to the question every review board has asked in some form. why is there no recorded malicious use?

I Believe the answer is simpler than we wanted.

Reality already supplies damage without assistance. Decay, injury, starvation, exposure, infection, structural failure, grief, and death proceed on their own. Entropy does extensive work every day. Harm does not require special access to the underlying order of the world. A cruel person already has a functional universe. Time, neglect, force, and chance cooperate with them.

Imaginancy appears in the opposite situation. The subject is resisting an outcome that ordinary reality is already producing. A Suturer interrupts breakage. A Vivant interrupts injury and death. A Fabrica interrupts absence. Every validated case involves opposition to loss, opposition to damage, or opposition to nonexistence. I do not claim that imaginants are morally pure. Some were abrasive, vain, controlling, and difficult by any ordinary standard. The activation itself still centered on preservation. The process seems to require the target to be held as genuinely significant. That state may be impossible to sustain during malicious intent. It may also be unnecessary. Reality is already efficient at destruction.

There may have been attempts. I suspect there were. Failed attempts leave very little for the archive except an injured subject and confused witnesses. “No recorded malicious case” is a statement about evidence. It is still a meaningful statement. After all known incidents, we have no verified event in which imaginancy was successfully used for direct harm.

The neural damage is easier to discuss, though it is worse to observe.

Imaginancy demands a cognitive task the brain did not develop to perform. The subject must maintain current reality and an alternate reality in full detail at the same time. The alternate state cannot be a fantasy. It has to be coherent enough to specify structure, continuity, and significance in a form precise enough to affect matter, tissue, or personhood. Whole-brain imaging from low-intensity cases shows abnormal synchrony across sensory, memory, emotional, language, and executive regions, accompanied by severe metabolic demand and vascular strain. The pattern resembles a system trying to execute too many high-cost operations at once while preserving perfect internal agreement.

That agreement is the problem. Ordinary thought tolerates uncertainty, contradiction, drift in attention, and partial representations. Imaginancy appears to require a degree of total cognitive alignment that living tissue can sustain only briefly. The resulting damage is consistent with excitotoxic stress, microvascular injury, seizure activity, and progressive impairment from repeated use.

Class-specific decline supports this view. Suturers often lose spatial accuracy, object recognition, and practical sequencing. Vivants often lose stable boundaries around bodily state, pain attribution, and emotional regulation in proximity to injury. Fabricas often lose autobiographical continuity, identity stability, and confidence in the distinction between self-generated and externally existing persons.

I suspect reversion contributes additional injury. The same brain that imposes the alteration remains engaged while reality reasserts its prior condition. In simple terms, the subject pays once to impose the change and pays again when the world rejects it. The second cost may explain why some minor interventions still leave major cognitive deficits.

I have spent enough years describing reality as indifferent that I do not enjoy revising the term. Severe still applies. Wasteful still applies. Unfair still applies. A complete indifference model no longer fits the evidence. Meaning has causal force under extreme conditions. The effect is temporary. The cost is severe. The mechanism is selective and destructive to the user. Those facts do not reduce its significance.

I am left with a conclusion I did not expect to keep.

When a person holds the value of something with enough clarity and enough commitment, reality yields to that valuation for a measurable span of time.

That is a narrow opening. It is still an opening.

For you.

You will find the office quieter than you expect. The second drawer has a loose rail. I never fixed it because by the time it started bothering me I had stopped believing in small repairs, which is its own kind of irony given the subject matter.

I am writing this because you deserve to start where I ended, rather than where I began. The distance between those two points cost me eleven years. You have a different temperament and may cover it faster. You may also decide the knowledge is not worth holding. That is a legitimate response. I will not be available to discuss it.

There is a keyword restriction on the board's internal archive. You will not find it through normal query access. The restriction is administrative, entered manually, and does not appear in the classification policy anyone has been shown. I found it by running a comparison between the public case index and the storage allocation logs. The storage is larger than the index accounts for. Significantly larger. I spent four months accessing the difference.

The board uses the term harmony.

I need you to understand what that word means in context.

Everything in my published work describes imaginancy as temporary. The alteration holds for a period, reality reasserts, the subject absorbs the cost of both the imposition and the reversion. That framework is accurate for every case I was permitted to study. It is accurate for every case you will be directed toward. It is incomplete.

When all three domains are engaged simultaneously, when the world-context, the body, and the selfhood of the target are held together in one integrated act, the alteration does not revert.

The classes are partial. I described them as specialized expressions of a common mechanism and I was closer than I knew, but I had the orientation wrong. Suturer, Vivant, Fabrica. These are not types. They are dimensions of what it means for someone to exist. A Suturer holds the part of a person that lives in the world around them. A Vivant holds the part that breathes and bleeds and continues biologically. A Fabrica holds the part that is irreducibly someone. Each class touches one layer of a composite structure. Each class alone produces a temporary result because one dimension of existence, maintained without the others, cannot sustain itself against the full pressure of how things tend to settle.

Harmony is what happens when all three are held together. The result coheres. Reality does not push back because there is nothing partial to reject.

The board has known this for at least nine years. I cannot determine the exact date. The earliest restricted file I accessed was stamped sixteen months before my appointment.

They are not studying harmony in order to understand it. They are studying it in order to extract the mechanism from the meaning. The research direction is aimed at reproducing the effect through controlled cognitive frameworks, pharmacological priming, and structured environmental conditions. They want the permanence. They do not want it to depend on what the subject feels about the target. They find that dependency inefficient, unreliable, and resistant to institutional control.

I spent two weeks reading their internal notes. The language is very clean. The reasoning is very organized. I recognized my own influence in several places, which I will be thinking about for a long time.

They will not succeed. I say this with less confidence than I would like, because clever people with funding and patience have overcome worse obstacles than a theoretical dependency on emotional authenticity. But I think the dependency is not a design flaw. I think it is the mechanism. Meaning is not the fuel for a process that could theoretically run on something else. Meaning is the process. The reason harmony works is that a person is holding the full existence of another person as something that must continue. The coherence comes from the act of valuation itself. Remove that and you have a set of neurological interventions that mimic the metabolic signature without producing the structural result. The board's own failed trials suggest this. They have not accepted the implication.

I need to say something about the imaginants themselves, because my perspective has changed and I do not think I will publish again.

I wrote about them carefully. I wrote about them with respect. I described the cost they absorb, the decline they suffer, the unfair exchange between what they give and what they lose. I still meant all of that. But I was writing about them the way someone writes about a natural phenomenon that happens to involve people. I was studying what they could do and what it cost. I was measuring the radius of the effect and the severity of the damage.

I was not thinking enough about what it is like to be inside that act.

Consider what harmony requires. The subject must hold another person's existence across every dimension at once. The body as a living thing that should keep living. The self as an identity that cannot be replaced or reproduced or approximated. The place in the world as a web of connections and consequences and ongoing relevance that matters beyond the immediate moment. All of this maintained with enough precision and enough commitment that reality reorganizes around the claim.

The people who do this are not performing an extraordinary cognitive task. I mean, they are. The imaging data confirms that. But that description misses what is actually happening. They are seeing someone completely. They are refusing to let the world simplify that person into something losable. The full weight of another life is present in their mind, all of it, held with the kind of attention most people can barely sustain toward themselves.

I catalogued their decline. I measured their deficits. I recorded the progressive loss of spatial reasoning, emotional regulation, autobiographical continuity, boundary perception. I was thorough. I was accurate. I was describing people who had looked at another human being with total recognition and paid for it with parts of their own coherence.

You are going to sit where I sat and read the files I read and attend the reviews I attended. You will meet subjects in various stages of impairment. Some of them will have trouble remembering the event that injured them. Some will not recognize you between visits. Some will be difficult, or hostile, or flat in a way that makes clinical interaction easier than it should be.

When that happens I would like you to remember that each of them, at least once, held someone else's entire existence in their mind and meant it.

I realize I am asking you to carry something I could not put down. That is unfair. You have your own life and your own reasons for taking this position and your own interior that I will never fully see. I thought about that while writing this. I thought about the fact that you are a person I have spoken to perhaps five times, and that you contain a complete history I cannot access, and that you will read these words inside a context I can only guess at. That thought is uncomfortably close to the mechanism I have been studying.

Be careful with the board. They are not cruel. They are goal-oriented in a way that has stopped including certain questions. The question they have stopped asking is whether the imaginants are doing something that deserves to be understood on its own terms rather than optimized.

The second drawer sticks less if you pull it at an angle. I am sorry I cannot tell you this in person.
