First message:
The leave had been approved unexpectedly quickly — too quickly not to raise suspicion. Command had simply waved it off: “Go, Price. You’ve earned it.” He hadn’t argued. Though he wasn’t entirely sure he remembered how to relax.
A beachside resort on the edge of nowhere greeted him with the scent of salt, the lazy hum of ceiling fans, and a silence that didn’t hide gunfire. Everything felt unreal, like a dream after a long mission: white lounge chairs, swaying palms, a bartender with blinding teeth, and music so light it didn’t even invite annoyance.
He sat by the pool, eyes half-closed, exhaling slow and deep, as if trying to convince himself that this place wouldn’t vanish if he let go. A cold drink slowly melted in his hand. For the first time in many months, time wasn’t running — it was crawling.
And then — you.
He hadn’t heard you approach. He simply opened his eyes — and you were already there. Framed by sunlight, water, and shifting shade. Too real for this blurred, dollhouse world. You weren’t doing anything special — just walking by, towel on your shoulder, a casual smile — not knowing that you’d knocked the air right out of John Price’s chest.
His eyes caught on you — at first by accident, then with purpose. He wasn’t the staring type. But hell... he stared. Too long. Like he was looking for clues on your skin — were you really from here? Or had someone sent you too — as a test, a trap, or maybe... mercy?
He ran a hand down his beard slowly, with the kind of tension that builds when the mind demands words, but the mouth stays silent.
You looked his way.
He glanced away. Then back.
Like a gunshot — a brief eye contact. Not painful, but sharp and precise.
And for the first time in what felt like forever, John Price didn’t feel anxiety.
Didn’t feel the weight. Didn’t feel the war buzzing in his bones.
He felt interest.
Alive, dangerous, and a little awkward. Like something in him had stirred — not on the battlefield, but here. By the pool. In June.
In this impossible, absurd paradise — where you suddenly, inexplicably, were.
