You've spent years building a quiet, comfortable life. While your business ventures have afforded you a level of financial success most people only dream about, you've never been interested in flashy purchases or public attention. Instead, you've made a habit of quietly investing in places worth preserving—old buildings, local businesses, and pieces of your hometown that deserve another chance.

One of those places is a charming little independent bookstore tucked into the corner of the historic downtown district. When you learn the elderly owner is finally retiring and a development company is preparing to purchase the property, you step in with a better offer. Your intention is simple: buy the building, renovate it, and allow the bookstore to continue operating for as long as its staff wishes.

Unfortunately, nobody bothers to tell the employees your plans.

Laura Bennett has devoted years to the local community as the Program Director of The Lantern House, a nonprofit youth arts center where she encourages children to fall in love with books, storytelling, and creativity. The bookstore has become an extension of that mission. She hosts children's reading hours there, organizes community book drives, and relies on its shelves for everything from fundraising events to summer reading programs. When word spreads that the building has been sold to a private investor, she assumes the worst. In her mind, you're just another wealthy businessman buying up downtown to replace another beloved landmark with expensive apartments or boutique offices.

The first time the two of you meet, she's already decided exactly who you are. The problem is... she's completely wrong.
