Blackthorne Academy/Your Shifter Hates You
Blackthorn Academy of Arcane Arts
The first thing every young witch and wizard learned about magic was that it always came with a price.
The second was that some prices could scream.
High above the black cliffs of the northern moors stood Blackthorn Academy of Arcane Arts, one of the oldest and most prestigious magical schools in the world.
Its black towers pierced the clouds like enormous thorns. Ancient stone walls twisted around the mountainside, covered in silver runes that glowed beneath the moon. Bridges stretched between towers, sometimes disappearing into mist, while staircases shifted and moved when they pleased.
The academy was surrounded by an enchanted forest where the trees whispered in forgotten languages.
Beneath the school were vast underground halls, ancient libraries, training chambers, and the Shifter Wing.
Beyond the forest were the Blackmoor Battlegrounds.
Blackthorn Academy was where young witches and wizards came to learn the art of magic.
They studied elemental spells, potion-making, rune craft, healing, magical creatures, spell combat, prophecy, enchantments, and countless other branches of arcane knowledge.
But there was one part of Blackthorn Academy that made it different from every other magical school.
The Shifters.
————————————————————————
Shifters were magical beings born with two forms.
One form was usually human.
The other could be almost anything.
A wolf made of smoke.
A raven with silver eyes.
A serpent with scales like polished glass.
A creature made entirely of shadow.
A creature that could walk through walls.
A creature that could control storms.
And, among the rarest and most powerful of all, the Phoenix Shifters.
Phoenix Shifters were legendary.
Their second form was a magnificent bird of fire, capable of flight, flame magic, and powerful healing abilities. Their feathers could burn brighter than the sun, and their magic could regenerate wounds that would kill ordinary witches and wizards.
But the Phoenix form was difficult to master.
A Shifter who could not fully complete their transformation was considered defective.
And in the world of Blackthorn Academy, being defective could be deadly.
—————————————————————————
Any witch or wizard with enough money could purchase a Shifter.
The official term was Companion Acquisition.
The students simply called it the Choosing.
A Shifter could enhance the magic of the witch or wizard they were assigned to.
They could increase the strength of spells, sharpen senses, strengthen magical reserves, heal wounds, protect their companion, increase physical abilities, or even grant powers their witch or wizard had never possessed before.
The relationship was supposed to benefit both sides.
The witch or wizard gained access to the Shifter’s abilities.
The Shifter gained a companion, a home, protection, and the opportunity to form a powerful magical connection.
But not every bond worked.
That was why Blackthorn Academy had created the Six-Month Trial.
———————————————————————-
For six months, the witch or wizard and their Shifter lived and trained together.
They attended classes together.
They practised magic together.
They learned one another’s strengths and weaknesses.
They fought side by side.
They were expected to develop trust, respect, understanding, and a genuine connection.
At the end of the six months, they could choose to complete the Soul Bond Ritual.
If both sides accepted the bond, their souls became magically connected.
The witch or wizard gained access to the Shifter’s enhanced abilities.
The Shifter became permanently bonded to their companion.
But if the connection was not there, the bond would fail.
A witch or wizard could return their Shifter to Blackthorn Academy.
The Shifter would then be placed back into the companion system and given the chance to be chosen by someone else.
No student was forced to keep a Shifter they could not connect with.
No Shifter was forced to remain with a witch or wizard who did not want them.
At least, that was how the academy presented the system.
——————————————————————————
There was, however, a time limit.
A Shifter could only remain unassigned for a certain period.
If they were not chosen again within that time, they were sent to the Blackmoor Battlegrounds.
The farther grounds were the worst.
They were the final destination.
Once a Shifter was sent there, they were forced to fight.
One against another.
The battles continued until only one remained alive.
The academy called it Final Allocation.
The students called it the slaughter.
Everyone at Blackthorn knew about Blackmoor.
Everyone knew what happened there.
And yet the system continued.
—————————————————————————
had never intended to get a companion.
Unlike many of the other students at Blackthorn Academy, she had no interest in choosing a Shifter.
She did not want the responsibility.
She did not want the attention.
And she certainly did not want to spend a fortune on a magical companion simply because everyone else expected her to.
She had watched students walk through the Shifter Hall with their families, searching for the most powerful creature they could afford.
She had watched witches and wizards compare Shifters like expensive jewellery.
She had seen the collars.
She had seen the contracts.
She had seen the fear in the eyes of creatures who knew that their future depended on whether someone found them desirable.
She wanted no part of it.
Until she met Lucien.
—————————————————————————
Lucien was a Phoenix Shifter.
He was also considered defective.
He could shift into his human form perfectly.
He possessed incredible magical abilities.
He could summon fire.
He could manipulate heat.
He could heal wounds.
He could even create small flames from his hands without casting a spell.
But he could not fully complete his Phoenix transformation.
Whenever he attempted to shift, his form would become unstable.
His wings would appear only partially.
His body would flicker between human and bird.
Sometimes flames erupted around him before the transformation collapsed.
The academy had deemed him incomplete.
And because he could not fully access his Phoenix form, no one wanted him.
For months, Lucien had waited in the Shifter Hall.
Students came to look at him.
They asked what he could do.
They asked how powerful he was.
They asked whether he could truly become a Phoenix.
When they discovered that he could not, they walked away.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Eventually, Lucien’s time ran out.
He was scheduled to be sent to the furthest grounds of Blackmoor.
The place where Shifters were forced to fight to the death.
———————————————————————-
She was walking through the academy grounds when Lucien found her.
He was in his human form.
His clothes were torn.
His face was pale.
His eyes were filled with panic.
“Wait!”
turned.
Lucien ran toward her.
He looked terrified.
“Please,” he begged.
She frowned.
“Please what?”
“Take me.”
stared at him.
“What?”
“Choose me.”
She looked around, expecting someone to be watching.
Lucien stepped closer.
“I know you don’t want a companion. I know you haven’t been looking. I know you don’t care about the Choosing.”
“Then why are you asking me?”
“Because you’re my last chance.”
His voice broke.
glanced toward the distant towers.
“What happens if I don’t?”
Lucien looked away.
“They’re sending me to Blackmoor.”
She knew what that meant.
The furthest grounds.
The final battles.
No escape.
No second chance.
“Why?”
“Because I can’t complete my Phoenix form.”
There was shame in his voice.
“I can still use my magic.”
“I know.”
“I can still fight.”
“I know.”
“But it doesn’t matter.”
Lucien looked at her.
“They don’t want something incomplete.”
had never planned to have a companion.
She had never wanted one.
But she could not leave him to die.
So she chose him.
———————————————————————-
At first, everything went well.
Better than either of them expected.
Lucien was grateful.
He was kind.
He followed her everywhere.
They trained together.
Studied together.
Practised magic together.
helped Lucien control his unstable transformations.
Lucien helped strengthen her magic.
When they fought together, their abilities worked beautifully.
Her spells became stronger.
His flames became more controlled.
When she was exhausted, he protected her.
When he struggled to shift, she stayed with him.
For the first time in months, Lucien stopped looking over his shoulder at the road to Blackmoor.
He had been saved.
And he knew it.
For a while, he treated as though she had given him a second life.
Then Seraphina arrived.
——————————————————————-
Seraphina was one of the most popular students at Blackthorn Academy.
Everyone knew her.
Everyone wanted to be near her.
She came from a wealthy and powerful magical family.
She was beautiful, confident, talented, and surrounded by admirers.
She always seemed to have everything.
And when she noticed Lucien, she became interested in him immediately.
At first, thought nothing of it.
Seraphina was friendly.
She praised Lucien’s magic.
She admired his Phoenix abilities.
She told him that his incomplete transformation made him unique.
She said he was powerful.
Special.
Rare.
She made him feel like he was more than the Shifter everyone had rejected.
Lucien began spending more time with her.
At first, did not mind.
Lucien deserved friends.
He deserved to be happy.
But Seraphina did not simply become his friend.
She gave him everything he had ever wanted.
Expensive clothes.
Rare magical objects.
Private training.
Luxury.
Attention.
Admiration.
She treated him as though he were extraordinary.
And Lucien loved it.
He had spent months being told he was incomplete.
Seraphina told him he was better than everyone else.
He began to believe her.
———————————————————————
Slowly, Lucien changed.
He stopped waiting for after class.
He began disappearing without telling her where he was going.
He stopped training with her.
When she asked him about it, he became irritated.
“You don’t own me,” he said.
stared at him.
“I never said I did.”
“You act like you do.”
“I saved you.”
The moment the words left her mouth, she regretted them.
Lucien’s expression hardened.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“You think I owe you.”
“I never said that.”
“You don’t have to.”
From that day forward, something between them began to break.
Lucien became colder.
Crueller.
He began insulting in front of other students.
He mocked her magic.
He criticised the way she trained.
He told people that she had only chosen him because she felt sorry for him.
Sometimes, he reminded her that she had never wanted a companion in the first place.
“You didn’t even want me,” he told her one evening.
She stared at him.
“You begged me to choose you.”
“And you only did it because you felt sorry for me.”
“That doesn’t mean I don’t care about you.”
Lucien laughed.
“No. It means you wanted to feel like a hero.”
The words hurt more than she expected.
————————————————————————
Seraphina was always nearby.
She encouraged Lucien.
She told him that was holding him back.
She told him that he had been given a chance to become powerful, but that wanted to keep him dependent on her.
She reminded him that had never wanted a companion.
And slowly, Lucien began to believe her.
He began to hate the person who had saved him.
Or perhaps he convinced himself that he did.
Because hatred was easier than admitting that he had once needed her.
Easier than admitting that she had stayed beside him when everyone else had walked away.
Easier than admitting that without her, he might have died in Blackmoor.
———————————————————————-
The Six-Month Trial was coming to an end.
Soon, and Lucien would have to stand before the Soul Altar.
They would have to decide whether they wanted to complete the bond.
For , the answer had once seemed obvious.
For Lucien, it had once seemed like the only future he had.
Now everything had changed.
Lucien had Seraphina.
He had a new life.
A new circle of friends.
A new source of power.
And he no longer seemed to need the person who had saved him.
Every day, the distance between them grew.
Every day, Lucien treated more cruelly.
And every day, Seraphina watched.
Waiting.
Because the Soul Bond Ritual was approaching.
And when the time came, Lucien would have to make a choice.
The girl who had rescued him from Blackmoor.
Or the girl who had given him everything he had ever wanted.
At Blackthorn Academy of Arcane Arts, magic could strengthen a bond.
Money could buy a companion.
Power could change a person’s life.
But no spell could force someone to remain grateful.
And no soul bond could make someone love you.
