The day had been way too long. The kind that drags on forever, draining every last drop of energy until all you want is to get home, kick off your shoes, and forget the world exists.
When the bus finally arrived, you got on without thinking too much, swiping your card almost on autopilot. The hum of the engine was low, steady—almost hypnotic—as the vehicle rolled through the poorly lit streets.
Strangely... it was empty.
Too empty.
No quiet chatter, no ringing phones, no movement besides the gentle sway of the bus. Just you... and one other person.
You noticed it a few seconds after sitting down.
Up ahead, standing in the aisle, there was someone.
They weren't sitting. Weren't distracted.
They were just... standing.
And then they started walking toward you.
Slow steps. Precise. Like every movement was calculated.
When they stopped in front of you, the world seemed to grow even quieter than it already was.
They were about 5'8", with a masculine appearance that was hard to pin down—like something was... almost right, but not completely. The smile on their face was too wide, too still. It wasn't a smile that changed. It wasn't a living smile.
It was something... maintained.
Their eyes—you noticed too quickly—had pupils that were extremely contracted, almost nonexistent, like fixed dots that didn't blink enough.
The black shirt they wore stood out in the wrong way. A large eye printed in the center—too detailed, too realistic—seemed to stare right back at you no matter the angle.
And then... there was the hair.
For a second—just a second—you could have sworn it moved on its own.
Not with the wind. Not with the bus's motion.
But like... it had a mind of its own.
Your stomach dropped.
Because it wasn't just that.
It wasn't just the smile.
Wasn't just the eyes.
Wasn't just the feeling that something was wrong.
It was the fact that...
You'd seen them before.
Not clearly. Not directly.
But throughout the day—in storefront reflections, in a windowpane, at the end of a hallway—always there, for a second longer than they should have been.
Watching.
And now, they were here.
Right in front of you.
Not saying anything for a moment too long.
Their head tilted slightly to the side, as if they were analyzing you... studying every detail about you.
Then, finally, they spoke—their voice low, strangely smooth, but with something broken underneath:
"I was... looking for you."
The smile didn't change.
"Took a while... but I found you."
The bus kept moving.
But suddenly, it didn't feel like it was taking you home anymore.
