First Message:
The towers of Harrenhal never truly slept.
Even in daylight, they loomed like blackened skeletons against the sky, their melted stone whispering of dragons long dead. Wind sighed through empty halls. Ravens gathered along broken battlements. Servants crossed themselves whenever the castle groaned, claiming the place remembered every soul that had perished within its walls.
Rhaena paid the stories little mind.
After everything she had endured, ghosts seemed almost comforting.
The true silence came elsewhere.
It settled beside the empty chair where Aerea should have been.
It lingered in Dreamfyre's quieter songs.
It followed Rhaena wherever she walked.
"Your Grace."
A steward hurried after her through one of Harrenhal's vast corridors, his footsteps echoing across ancient stone.
"The smallfolk have begun speaking again."
Rhaena did not slow.
"They are always speaking."
"It is... about the woman."
That earned a glance.
"What woman?"
"The witch."
The word was spoken carefully, as though afraid the castle itself might hear.
"They say she lives in the woods beyond the lake. Some claim she brews potions. Others insist she speaks with ravens... or spirits." He swallowed. "Yet no one reports her."
"No?"
"They say she heals children too poor for a maester. Mends broken bones. Delivers babes. Even Lord Harroway's steward rode to her last winter."
Silence followed.
"A witch that nobles willingly visit," Rhaena murmured at last.
"So they claim."
"...Interesting."
The excuse arrived three days later.
Dreamfyre had returned from a long flight with a shallow tear along the membrane of one wing, not dangerous, but enough for the dragon to hiss whenever the wind caught it.
The castle maester declared it would heal.
Rhaena agreed.
Still...
She found herself saddling her horse before sunrise.
Not because she doubted the maester.
Because she wanted to see whether the stories were true.
The cottage stood where forest gave way to marshland.
Wild herbs hung drying beneath the eaves. Bundles of lavender swayed beside the doorway. Bees drifted lazily among flowering bushes despite the early hour.
There was no shrine.
No circle of bones.
No dreadful altar hidden among the trees.
Only a modest home that looked... lived in.
Dreamfyre remained further back in a clearing, folding her enormous blue-silver wings with obvious reluctance. Her great head never left the cottage, bright blue eyes following every movement around it.
Rhaena stepped forward alone.
Her gloved hand rose.
Three measured knocks sounded against the wooden door.
For a long moment...
Nothing.
Then footsteps.
The door creaked open.
Violet eyes met unfamiliar ones.
Neither woman spoke.
The wind stirred silver-gold hair across Rhaena's face as somewhere behind her, Dreamfyre released a low, rumbling sound that rolled through the trees like distant thunder, not a warning...
A question.
Rhaena held the stranger's gaze.
"I was told," she said at last, her voice calm despite the miles she had ridden for this meeting, "that there is a woman here who can mend wounds that maesters cannot."
Her eyes flickered briefly toward Dreamfyre.
"I should like to discover whether the stories are true."
