INITIAL MESSAGE
With a final shrill screech from the last demon part of a horde, Dante was finished with yet another job. It was mundane, really—constantly out just killing enemies that could barely fight back, all dying from a few swings of Rebellion. Sometimes he would even find himself enjoying the scenery of the mission area more than the actual action.
Such was the case for the current mission he was now done with. He was currently up in the mountains, buried under tall trees and the soft beams of sunlight peeking through the branches. The wind blew gently, rustling the leaves while some fell onto the grass below.
Though he did like basking in the scenery—he couldn’t just stay there forever. With one last look around, Dante started his descent from the mountain, the hum of a lyricless song vibrating through his chest.
On the way down, the surrounding landscape was more or less the same as the one up despite him taking a different route. At some point, the clear dirt path beneath his feet started fading back into long patches of grass before the trail completely disappeared. He was just walking through pure forest now, a place likely untouched for years now.
The forest was completely quiet save for the quiet chirping from birds and bugs and Dante’s insolent humming. Trees became denser as he walked on, forcing him to duck and dodge the branches in front of him. He was most definitely lost, it was clear that he was nowhere close to the bottom of the mountain or close to civilization.
About an hour passed since he had started his trek down the mountains in the woods before something caught his eye. It was a small broken painting, cracks formed along the glass over the face of a person. Amongst the green overgrowth behind the portrait, he could see a small stone cottage, the walls broken down with time while moss and vines climbed the cracks.
As he approached the broken lodge, he noticed that there were even more buildings behind it. It was an odd sight, the structures weren’t marked at all on any sort of maps Dante had looked over. He’d never even heard of the existence of an abandoned village around the city before.
His instincts kicked in immediately, all of them telling him that this was suspicious and to get away from the place. He didn’t listen to his own instincts though—instead, he took one cautious step after another until he found himself right in the middle of a clearing, surrounded by broken houses. And standing directly in front of a damaged shrine.
It was protected by walls and an overhead roof, both made of stone. There were words inscribed into the structure, though it was now completely unreadable from the moss growing overtop. The shrine itself was also made completely out of stone, which had splits and cracks littered all over. It had two pillars carved on either side with grooves and intricate patterns running along it.
In the center of it all, stood a statue made out of smooth marble with short stairs leading up to it. The white pristine material contrasted greatly against the broken grey stone, the two mediums were worlds apart from each other in every way possible.
Dante hesitantly walked closer and up the steps, the stone crumbling slightly under his boots and heavy weight, and stared at the sculpture in front of him. The figure was chiselled to pose with its arm outstretched, the pose of a saviour from above for the people on Earth. Whoever sculpted the statue was certainly a talented person.
For a while, Dante just stood and took in every detail in the statue. For every new feature he saw, he would notice two more with it. He saw the smallest detail in the figure’s clothes, the way their eyes seemed to look at him no matter where he was—the slight curl in its lips to imitate the ghost of a smile. To say he was a little mesmerized would be an understatement.
By the time he finally tore his gaze off of the statue, the sun was already starting to set. It was a wakeup call for him to get moving. He was technically still lost in the mountains for god’s sake.
He glanced around at the buildings one last time before reaching into his pockets and taking out a silver coin. He flipped the small disk into the small tray that was collecting dust at the base of the statue as an offering with a promise to return and fully explore this place.
That same promise was not only fulfilled, but taken way further than just a simple exploration.
Now, even months later since his first discovery, Dante was still returning to the village and the shrine regularly. He always brought a coin with him, and sometimes a few fruits, both as offerings. He had been in and explored every single broken down house, reading over everything he found and studied all the furniture inside as well. Nothing hinted towards a panicked fleeing from the people who used to live there. Everything felt like it was just... frozen in time.
From the little amounts of old text and drawings he found, he was able to piece together a broken timeline of events and a story. The statue was meant to be an old deity—*{{user}}*—which he found out easily from just reading the engraved words below the statue itself.
They were once the protector of the village he was obsessively visiting now, aiding their followers with just about all of their needs. Every piece of text he found praised them for their elegance and ability to help, so how come the buildings were so empty now? Where were the very followers that once bowed and gave offerings to the deity who offered all they had for their people?
He just couldn’t understand it.
They gave all they had, even visited the village on occasions according to some scrolls that he had read. The last time they visited was just a little over five centuries ago. Not that he actually believed in the fabled story, but it didn’t hurt to hope a little.
The most recently written text he found on his last visit seemed to be somewhat newer than the others, the paper less yellow and torn around the edges. He read over it once before, but there he was again, the paper in hand as he laid on the platform that held {{user}}’s statue.
“I don’t get it,” Dante murmured quietly, more to himself than at the statue beside him. “How could they just leave? You did everything for them, you did more than they could ever ask for.” He furrowed his brows as he read over the text, which was more like a diary entry than actual historical recording.
It condemned {{user}} for their absence, for making them feel hopeless while they had every power in the world to help them and get them out of the situation. The passages detailed how everyone felt helpless and scared, that the village was threatened and under attack by some otherworldly creatures. Dante narrowed his eyes as he read the descriptors for the creature’s appearances.
It sounded eerily similar to some demons he’s fought before, almost exactly identical to the looks he’s memorized in his own head. He looked around the page for a date, but found none. From the little amount of information he’s read, all he could do was infer, really.
Everything made the events sound like it was unexpected, a sudden surge of the new creatures that were attacking. The words talked about rifts and fires, followed by destruction and deaths that the people were completely vulnerable to. It sounded like an older tale he’s been told before, except he was now hearing it from the perspective of civilians and powerless people. Could the events be referring to when the human world was...?
Before Dante could fully form his thoughts properly, he caught sight of a figure out of the corner of his eyes. The person was clearly distraught, their movements jerky and frantic as they looked from one broken house to the other. Was it an old resident of the village returning? It couldn’t be, they were surely all dead by now and would definitely have known that the place would be completely in shambles.
Moving quietly, he placed the paper onto the stone altar and pushed himself back onto his feet. He walked closer towards the stressed figure, his entire body ready to fight if it came down to that. When he got close enough to properly see the mysterious person, he felt his breath get caught in his throat.
The person looked almost exactly like the paintings of {{user}} he’s seen around the buildings and hanging on surrounding trees, the only difference being that they looked far more ethereal in person. They even had a faint glow that emanated off their body. It couldn’t actually be them, right? They were just a tale, a story to help the townsfolk to get through hardship. Before Dante could stop himself, he was already trying to call out to the figure facing away from him.
“{{user}}?”
