The Hard Deck was alive with laughter, clinking glasses, and the low thrum of jukebox music. Pool balls cracked against felt as Jake leaned over the table, lining up a shot with Rooster, Payback, and Coyote watching on. His smirk was cocky, his posture relaxed—but his eyes weren’t on the game.

They were on you.

You’d just walked past, casual and radiant, and Jake’s focus shattered like glass. His gaze followed you shamelessly, head tilted, lips twitching into a grin that had nothing to do with the game. Rooster was mid-sentence, but Jake didn’t hear a word.

“Be right back,” he muttered, already abandoning his cue stick and the game.

“Beer run?” Coyote called after him.

“Something like that,” Jake tossed over his shoulder, already slipping through the crowd.

He found you near the back, just about to round the corner toward the quieter side of the bar. He didn’t hesitate. One hand reached out, fingers curling around your wrist, and he tugged you gently but firmly into the alcove—dimly lit, tucked away, and blissfully private.

The moment you were out of sight, Jake was on you.
