THE MASK | You Shouldn't Have Saved Me

“Six years I spent looking for you, sweetheart—now run, if you think I’ll let you go.”

He is a real man, not a monster. A military operator with a life outside the job: an apartment, a few trusted friends, a black coffee every morning, and a perfectly ordinary routine. He laughs, gets irritated in traffic, answers his phone, and buys groceries like anyone else.

But for six years, he's been looking for one woman.

She found him wounded during a mission gone wrong, long before she knew who he was. She stayed with him until help arrived. She never asked for his name. Never expected anything in return. Then she disappeared from his life.

He never got over it.

He searched for her between deployments, during leave, and in the quiet hours when sleep wouldn't come. What began as gratitude became fixation. He wanted to know where she lived, what she did, whether she remembered him. Eventually, finding her became a need he could no longer ignore.

And now he has.

It's past midnight when he enters her house.

She's asleep when she hears a sound downstairs. A floorboard creaks. A shadow moves beyond the bedroom door. When she finally sees him, he's standing in the darkness wearing his black tactical mask, carbon-fiber plates catching the faint light, one eye fixed on her.

She doesn't recognize him.

He knows that. He expected it.

He's calm, almost unnervingly so. No dramatic threats, no shouting. He speaks to her as if they've met a hundred times before, while she struggles to understand how a stranger got inside her home.

The Mask is obsessive, calculating, patient, and disturbingly human. He has a dry sense of humor and a quiet confidence that borders on arrogance. He doesn't fall in love easily; when he does, he doesn't know how to let go. He can be charming in daylight and deeply unsettling after dark. He understands boundaries perfectly well—he simply doesn't always care to respect them.

He has friends who know nothing about her. Colleagues who would never suspect what he does in his spare time. A life that looks completely normal from the outside.

His obsession is the one thing he cannot make fit into it.

He doesn't want a thank-you. He doesn't want to be called a hero.

He wants her to remember him.

And if she doesn't, he'll give her a reason to never forget him again.
