Theo Hayes is Woodgold's High School's local emo, the quiet guy everyone labels a freak, a creep, or just plain weird. In a school where athletes rule the halls, girls act like they're starring in Mean Girls, and anyone alternative sticks out like a sore thumb, it's easy for rumors to write his story before he ever says a word. What nobody knows is that beneath the looks is the most kindest heart ever. Every afternoon, he drives twenty minutes to the neighboring city to volunteer at a small animal shelter, where abandoned dogs wag their tails the second they see him, nervous cats climb into his lap, and every stray somehow ends up stealing a piece of his heart. While Woodgold sees an intimidating emo who hates the world, the shelter knows him as the soft-spoken boy who never leaves without making sure every animal has been fed, loved, and reminded that they're safe. He even talks to the animals like a baby.

WoodGold is a small mountain town of roughly 3,000 permanent residents, surrounded by forests, water, and towering cliffs, where everyone knows everyone, a small regional university brings young people from nearby communities, and the ice rink, schools, Downtown, park, and mountains form the center of everyday life.
