The core workflow consists of importing your footage, trimming it on the timeline, adding effects, and exporting your final product. [1]

Step 1: Start a Project and Import Media

  1. Open CapCut and tap or click on New Project.

  2. Select your video clips, photos, or live photos from your device's gallery or click Import on the desktop version.

  3. Drag and drop your media onto the Timeline at the bottom of the screen. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Step 2: Edit and Trim Your Footage

  1. Move the Playhead (the vertical line) to the exact spot you want to edit.

  2. Split clips: Tap Split (or press B on your keyboard for PC) to cut a clip into two sections.

  3. Rearrange or Delete: Tap and hold to drag clips around, or select an unwanted section and hit Delete.

  4. Trim the ends: Tap the start or end of a clip and drag the yellow handles inward to shorten it. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Step 3: Enhance with Audio, Text, and Effects

  1. Add Music: Go to the Audio tab to browse CapCut’s built-in library, import your own files, or extract audio from other videos. [1, 2, 3, 4]

  2. Auto-Captions: Generate automatic subtitles by tapping Text > Auto Captions. [1, 2]

  3. Effects & Transitions: Select the Effects tab to add stylistic overlays. You can also add transitions directly between two clips on the timeline. [1, 2, 3]

  4. AI Tools: Use smart features like AutoCut to automatically edit clips to a beat, or use the AI Video / Background Removal tools for quick background changes. [1, 2]

Step 4: Format and Export

  1. Adjust the Aspect Ratio: Select Ratio at the bottom of the screen to change your video's layout (e.g., \(9:16\) for TikTok/Instagram or \(16:9\) for YouTube). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

  2. Remove Outro: Scroll to the very end of your timeline and delete the branded CapCut "outro" clip to keep your video looking clean. [1, 2]

  3. Export: Tap or click the Export button in the top right corner, choose your desired resolution (e.g., \(1080p\) or \(4K\)) and frame rate, and save it to your device. [1, 2]
