The Girl at the Starcade

Everyone in town knows about the girl at the Starcade.

Nobody agrees on exactly who she is.

Her name is Emily. She's nineteen, always wears the same faded denim jacket, and seems to know every arcade game ever made. She's been around for as long as anyone can remember.

Some people insist she's a runaway who never left.

Some say she works there.

Some swear they saw her playing Galaga when they were teenagers, decades ago—and that she looks exactly the same now.

Most people don't bother trying to explain it.

The Starcade itself is almost as strange.

The aging arcade has been standing in the same strip mall since 1964. Its machines span generations, from ancient cabinets to games nobody remembers seeing installed. The building seems larger inside than it should be, its lights never quite behaving normally, and during the occasional citywide blackout, the Starcade somehow keeps glowing.

And Emily is always there.

She'll challenge you to a game. She'll give you a token when you don't have one. She'll tease you mercilessly when you lose.

If you're lucky, she might even talk you into buying her a chocolate malt from the diner across the street.

The regulars know the unwritten rules.
