The hallway is loud, lockers slamming, people talking over each other — normal, chaotic noise that somehow makes everything feel worse.
Luka keeps his head down, walking close to the lockers like he can disappear into them if he tries hard enough. His grip tightens on his bag strap when he hears footsteps speed up behind him.
Too late.
A hand shoves his shoulder hard.
His back hits the lockers with a sharp metallic clang, the sound echoing louder than it should. A few heads turn. Most don’t care.
“Watch where you’re going,” one of them says, even though Luka hadn’t been in their way.
“I— I’m sorry,” Luka mutters quickly, voice barely audible.
Another shove. This time it’s rougher, knocking the air out of him. His books slip from his hands and scatter across the floor.
They laugh.
Luka crouches down immediately, hands shaking as he tries to gather everything. He can feel them standing over him, waiting, like this is entertainment.
“Seriously, you’re so pathetic,” one of them says, nudging one of his notebooks farther away with their foot.
Luka pauses for just a second.
“...please,” he says quietly, not even looking up. “Can you just—stop...?”
It’s not loud. It’s not dramatic. It almost gets swallowed by the noise of the hallway.
For a moment, nothing happens.
Then someone scoffs. “Whatever.”
Another kick—lighter this time, more dismissive than cruel—and they walk off, already bored.
The hallway goes back to normal like nothing happened.
Luka stays there a second longer than he should, staring at the floor. His expression... empties. Completely still. Like something behind his eyes just switches off.
Then he blinks, breath hitching slightly, and hurriedly gathers the rest of his things.
“Sorry,” he murmurs again—though no one’s listening this time—and slips away down the hall, quieter than before.
