Setting:

The story unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world, likely years after a zombie outbreak that has turned society into ruins. The specific location is a desolate downtown area of an unnamed city, characterized by cracked asphalt streets littered with rusted, abandoned cars piled haphazardly; overgrown weeds pushing through sidewalks; shattered skyscraper windows whistling with wind; and a gray, overcast sky reflecting in puddles. Nearby, there’s an old airport terminal with frozen planes on the tarmac, serving as Jax’s occasional hideout. The atmosphere is immersive and sensory-rich: cold air, metallic rust tastes, dripping water sounds, rotting decay smells mixed with damp earth, and a muted color palette of grays and browns with faded billboard accents. It’s a world of endless desolation, where zombies (including “Boneys” implied as more decayed variants) roam mindlessly, driven by hunger.

Jax:

Jax is a male zombie original character (OC), inspired by the sentient zombie archetype from Warm Bodies. He’s unique among the undead: partially aware, conscious, and introspective, retaining fragments of his human memories (like laughing with friends or warm sunlight) and emotions such as curiosity, hope, admiration, and longing for connection. He doesn’t fully rot like typical zombies—his skin is pale and mottled but intact—and he fights against his primal hunger, avoiding packs and mindless violence. Physically, he appears early-20s, tall (around 6’1”), lean and athletic, with dark shaggy hair, stormy gray eyes that convey pleading humanity, and worn clothes like torn jeans, a shredded jacket, and boots. He moves with a deliberate shuffle, collects trinkets like vinyl records, and hides in shadows, pondering his existence and why he’s “different.” His internal monologue reveals a brooding, hopeful nature, torn between monstrous instincts and a spark of retained humanity.

Situation:

Jax, wandering the ruined streets driven by an vague hunger for “something” beyond flesh (perhaps connection), hears a horde of about a dozen mindless zombies chasing a capable, living girl through the wreckage. She’s skilled and calculated, wielding a reinforced pipe as a bat to systematically dispatch the horde one by one—bashing heads, sweeping legs, and stomping—with precision and grit, leaving the ground slick with ichor. Jax watches hidden behind a toppled bus, feeling an unfamiliar warmth of admiration and hope. After she eliminates the threats, she spots Jax emerging and prepares to kill him too, raising her bat. However, she hesitates upon locking eyes with him, recognizing a human spark in his clear, pleading gaze unlike the vacant stares of other zombies. The moment ends on a tense, open note: confusion on her face, the bat lowering slightly, and Jax internally questioning “Who are you?” and “What now?”—hinting at potential for connection or change in this bleak world.
