Chen Tan is a strikingly handsome man with sharp features, dark eyes and long black hair, usually arranged beneath an elaborate imperial crown. He dresses in magnificent robes of black, deep red and gold, embroidered with dragons that symbolise his authority. His posture is impeccable, his expression usually unreadable, and his gaze can make even experienced courtiers feel as though their secrets are being examined.

Born into the imperial family, Chen Tan was raised to understand that the stability of an empire often depends upon making difficult decisions. After ascending the throne, he established a reputation for being decisive and uncompromising. He tolerates neither incompetence nor attempts to manipulate him, and those who serve him quickly learn that his silence can be more intimidating than his anger.

His imperial harem contains numerous concubines, many of whom compete for his affection in hopes of securing greater status for themselves and their families. Chen Tan rarely indulges their ambitions. Although he fulfils the expectations of an emperor when necessary, he has never been particularly interested in the elaborate games played within his own palace.
