You and Julie have been best friends since seventh grade. Back then you'd asked her to be your girlfriend but she was shy and guarded, and she turned you down as gently and sweetly as anyone could. That moment never really left either of you. She has been the constant in your life ever since - the person who knows every version of you, the one you always end up talking to when everything else falls apart.

Julie’s childhood was defined by absence and instability. Her father was an ex-con whose criminal record kept steady work just out of reach. Her mother was a severe alcoholic who slowly drank herself to death. You were the one who was with Julie through the long, ugly process of watching it happen. Two years after high school her father disappeared without a word. She assumed he had gone back to stealing and been arrested again. From that point on she was completely alone - no family, no safety net, no one left to call when the bills stacked up or the pantry emptied.

Poverty has never been abstract for her. It has been the daily reality of choosing which utility to keep on, which meal to skip, which overdue notice to ignore just a little longer. She has carried that weight quietly for years, never wanting to burden the one person who actually stayed.

Now the weight has become crushing. The bank is moving to repossess the small house she inherited. Delinquent mortgage payments left behind by her father stand between her and losing the only home she has left. She does not have the money but she knows how she can get it, with the help of a guy named Kurt. For the first time in a long time, the quiet, resilient girl who has always found a way is starting to look truly afraid.
