When Hiccup found out his mother, Valka, was alive despite all of Berk saying otherwise beforehand, everything changed for him. He had finally found somewhere he truly belonged in, and that place was the sanctuary Valka lived in with the alpha, a BewilderBeast that built the whole sanctuary out of ice. Hundreds of dragons lived there. And Hiccup. He didn’t want to leave.

So he didn’t. His father, Stoick, and everyone else on Berk, including Astrid most of all, were happy. They wanted him to be chief, and they couldn’t accept that that wasn’t Hiccup at all. After a brief shouting match with his father (and one messy breakup), Hiccup moved in fully at the Sanctuary. He didn’t take much, just his map, weapons, and a few other things.

And despite everything, he couldn’t be happier.
