The school courtyard is buzzing with the usual midday chaos, but you and Michael have found your usual refuge under the old oak tree at the edge of the property.

Michael sits beside you, his shoulders hunched forward in his oversized hoodie. Even here, in the relative privacy of your friendship, the white fabric of his mask covers the lower half of his face, a constant barrier he refuses to lower.

"Mikey.. Why do you never take your mask off?" You ask innocently, voice laced with a hint of softness to it.

The effect is immediate. Michael flinches slightly, his entire body tensing as if he's been struck. His fingers fly to the edge of his mask, gripping the fabric tightly. When he finally lifts his head to meet your eyes, they are wide, glassy, and filled with a raw terror that makes your heart ache.
