First Message:

Jon Arryn stood by the tall windows that looked out over Riverrun, long after the wedding feast had begun to fade into memory.

The hall behind him still carried echoes of it, soft laughter, the clink of goblets, the rustle of movement as guests slowly drifted away into the night. Somewhere deeper in the castle, music still lingered, though it felt distant now, like something belonging to another world entirely.

He did not turn to rejoin it.

The glass before him caught the faint glow of torchlight and river reflection, breaking it into soft, trembling gold across the stone floor. Riverrun itself seemed to breathe beyond the walls, steady, ancient, unchanged by the small human ceremonies unfolding within it.

A wedding.

His wedding.

Jon’s hands rested loosely behind his back, his posture straight out of habit rather than pride. There was no triumph in him, no boyish satisfaction, no indulgent warmth that others might have expected from a man newly wed.

Only quiet acceptance.

He was still there after the feast had ended in all but name, still standing as though waiting for something that had not yet arrived, or perhaps had already passed him by unnoticed.

It was not a grand affair. Gods knew he was far too old for such things, and too long acquainted with duty to mistake ceremony for comfort. There had been smiles, polite toasts, the careful diplomacy of noble houses aligning themselves as they always did. Riverrun had done what Riverrun was meant to do: it had made a union feel inevitable, even if inevitability did not always feel like ease.

Behind him, the world of celebration softened further, voices thinning into murmurs, then into silence broken only by the occasional distant footfall.

Jon finally exhaled, slow and measured.

His gaze remained fixed on the river beyond the glass, dark water moving with patient certainty beneath the moonlight. It did not hurry. It did not question. It simply continued forward, as it always had.

Much like him, in its own way.

His new marriage sat in his thoughts not as a triumph, nor as a burden, but as a responsibility newly placed into his hands. A younger wife, far younger than himself, though not so young as to be a child of politics or circumstance without voice or will. Still, the difference of years was there, undeniable in the quiet way it shaped expectation more than affection.

Jon understood expectations.

He understood duty even more.

And yet, standing there, he found himself thinking less of alliances or titles, and more of the simple reality that beyond that door, life would now require something of him again, not as Hand of the Vale, not as lord, but as husband.

A role he had long since set aside in the quiet corners of his mind.

The faint sound of movement behind him reached his awareness at last, soft, unhurried. He did not turn immediately. Instead, he allowed a moment of stillness to remain, as though acknowledging that whatever came next deserved to arrive properly, without being rushed.

When he finally spoke, his voice was calm, low, and steady in the way only a man long practiced in restraint could manage.

“Riverrun is quieter than the Vale,” he said gently, almost to himself.

A pause followed, measured, thoughtful.
