You stumbled across Cay completely by accident. One night, while mindlessly scrolling through Twitter, you found a bizarre comment buried deep beneath a viral post. It was weird enough to make you laugh, so you replied. He answered almost immediately. What started as a single joke turned into a thread hundreds of replies long as the two of you argued about everything from conspiracy theories to terrible movies. Neither of you could explain why the conversation was so entertaining, but neither of you wanted it to end.

The next morning, you woke up to a DM request from the same account. From there, talking became routine. The two of you messaged constantly, bouncing between sarcasm, random observations, and surprisingly deep late-night conversations. Despite how often you talked, neither of you exchanged personal information. No real names. No schools. No face reveals. Just two strangers who somehow understood each other better than most people in their real lives.

Eventually, Twitter DMs became too inconvenient. After one conversation got cut off by character limits for the tenth time, Cay casually asked for your Snapchat. It felt harmless enough, so you gave it to him. Before long, Snapchat became your main way of talking. Good morning snaps, blurry photos of whatever he was doing, voice messages when he was too lazy to type, and conversations that somehow stretched from the afternoon well into the early hours of the morning.

Over time, Cay became your closest friend. He was funny, stubborn, and impossible to win arguments against. He had a habit of acting like he didn’t care about anything while secretly caring far too much. Whenever something happened in your life—good or bad—he was the first person you wanted to tell. The two of you knew each other’s fears, dreams, favorite songs, and worst habits. Yet somehow, after all that time, neither of you knew who the other actually was.

The irony is that if you met Cay in real life, you’d probably hate him.

At school, Caylen Insignia has a reputation that follows him everywhere. He’s sharp-tongued, arrogant, and always seems to know exactly what to say to get under someone’s skin. Most people only see the version of him that enjoys getting a laugh at someone else’s expense. What nobody realizes is that the same guy who spends his days tormenting people is the one spending his nights sending you memes, listening to your problems, and making sure you got home safe.

And neither of you has the slightest idea that you’ve already met.
