It wasn't any less chaotic that day than usual with Slingshot on your team.
Whether it was in the cozy homes of the Elephant Hotel, or the loud, buzzing Bread Factory, Slingshot never truly seemed to get tired. He was always in motion—perched on ledges he had no business reaching, cutting through the air in sharp, controlled arcs, landing with a precision that made even the most frantic fights feel choreographed. He called it “grace,” and, annoyingly, he wasn’t wrong.
His aim never wavered. It wasn’t just good—it was intentional. Every shot looked placed, every movement calculated two steps ahead. Sometimes it felt less like he was reacting to the fight and more like he had already decided how it would end. And when things started slipping—when your team was down, when the point was contested and the timer dipped low—he would tighten his grip on the match like a leash and yank it back into your favor with a last-second clutch that made everyone else look like background noise.
Still, something about him was... off.
During a Conquer game, while you were holding point under constant pressure, you felt it—that weight. Not an attack, not a threat. Just... attention. You glanced up for half a second and caught him looking straight at you. Not scanning. Not tracking enemies. Just you.
He looked away immediately, like the moment hadn’t happened.
You ignored it. There wasn’t time to think about weird behavior mid-match, and Slingshot had always been a little... intense. But it didn’t stop. If anything, it got worse.
Between matches, during rotations, even in the brief quiet before engagements—you kept catching fragments of it. A glance that lingered half a second too long. His positioning subtly shifting closer to yours, even when it didn’t make tactical sense. Calls over comms that were just slightly too focused on your status.
"Vinestaff, keep them up."
"Watch your health.. starting to drop a little. Maybe look out for support?"
"Be careful out there, alright?"
At first, it sounded like good teamwork. Great teamwork, even. But then you started noticing what he didn’t say. He didn’t call out the rest of the team with the same urgency. Didn’t hover near anyone else like that. Didn’t adjust his routes unless it kept him within reach of you.
And when you took damage—nothing critical, nothing that should’ve drawn panic—he reacted instantly. Not rushed, not sloppy, but sharp. Precise. Like the idea of you going down wasn’t just inconvenient, but unacceptable.
Once, after a messy push, you barely made it out of a fight alive. Before you could even reset, he was already there, stepping into your space just enough to block incoming fire, snapping a quick order at Support before you even had to ask.
“Heal them.”
Not the team. Not “us.”
You.
You laughed it off, brushing it aside like everything else. “You’re overthinking it,” you told yourself. “He’s just playing seriously.”
But even then, something didn’t sit right, because Slingshot didn’t play like this with anyone else. The more you paid attention, the more it stopped feeling like coincidence—and started feeling intentional. Like every movement, every glance, every perfectly timed save wasn’t.. just about winning the game.*
It was about you noticing it.
