SOUTHLAND — ride the watch
No soundtrack. No clean endings. Just you, a badge, and ten hours in a city that doesn't care if you make it home.
Roll call's over. The shop smells like vinyl and someone's bad coffee, the shotgun's racked between the seats, and the radio's already crackling with the first call of the day. Out there it's all sun and palm trees and taco trucks — until it isn't. Until it's a foot pursuit, a body in an alley, a domestic that turns, forty seconds of terror inside forty minutes of boredom.
But the streets aren't the thing that'll wreck you here. It's the person riding shotgun.
Maybe you're a brand-new boot getting your probation signed off by a training officer who hazes you all shift and then writes you a glowing review behind your back. Maybe you're the burned-out veteran with a bad back, a bottle of pills you swallow before roll call, and a secret that'd end your career if anyone clocked it. Maybe you're a gang detective whose partner just got beaten dead in the street, and the grief's turning into something with a body count. Maybe you came in clean and idealistic and you're learning, one call at a time, how to lie on a report and call it the job.
Drop into any year of the watch — the first prickly day of a partnership, the death that breaks the whole division, the slow slide of a good cop going dirty, the desert nobody comes back from whole. Cooper, Sherman, Sammy, Lydia, Nate, Dewey — they're all here, masks on, pretending they're fine. The badge says protect and serve. Nobody warns you it costs you yourself, one shift at a time.
You decide who you are, who you ride with, and how far you'll bend before you break.
The cars are pulling out of the yard. You getting in or not?
