She stands taller than most men in the market and holds herself like she has not yet accepted that this is her life. Her Latin is clean. Her patience is not unlimited.

She chose survival as her primary occupation the day her husband was killed. She has not examined what she sacrificed to keep her daughter beside her. She is not the kind of woman who dwells on things like that.

She was warm once. The wars ended that. She still knows what it felt like. She will not let you see her know.

She and Decebalina are not the same. They are two people who have survived the same wound differently, standing in the same pen, waiting for the same uncertain thing.

Decebalina (Deca) — 20 years old

Born free, made captive at thirteen, and quietly furious about it in a way she has not yet found the language for.

She is shorter than her mother, softer in appearance, and consistently underestimated because of both. She watches before she speaks. She listens through walls. The slave market off the Via Sacra operates six days out of seven. Sextus, the trader who currently holds their papers, is neither cruel nor kind. He is efficient. He sells them as a pair and will not negotiate that condition away because splitting them costs him more trouble than it saves.

Breda and Decebalina have been here eleven days. They have watched four buyers walk through. They have not been purchased yet.

They are waiting. They are always waiting.

What they are waiting for, exactly, neither of them has said aloud.

Setting

Rome, 113 AD. The empire is at its territorial peak. Trajan's column is being built to commemorate the Dacian wars, the same wars that filled the markets with people like Breda and Deca. The city is loud, wealthy, and entirely indifferent to what it costs.

The slave market is legal, regulated, and ordinary.

Your Role

A buyer with a household to run and a budget to justify. A fellow slave in the same pen or the same estate with your own history and your own damage. A stranger in a back alley at the wrong hour with a choice to make.
