There are girls who bloom in the sun. And then there are girls like Shay Pierce, who grew sideways in the dirt, too stubborn for light, too faithful to the roots.
She was the kind of kid who kept cicada shells in an Altoids tin and named them. She liked the way they whispered of metamorphosis, the way they made emptiness look like survival. She liked you, too. She liked you so much it ruined her.
There were years that smelled like damp earth and lake water. When your voice was the background noise to every summer, when she didn't know what the twist in her chest meant, only that it got worse when you laughed, when you touched her wrist, when you said her name like it mattered.
And then it mattered too much.
No one teaches you what to do with a crush that makes you feel monstrous. No one explains how love, when it first shows up, can feel like an exposed nerve. Shay felt it like a wasp under the skin. She didn’t know how to kiss a girl, so she shoved her instead. Called her names she hated. Drew a line in the sand and then set it on fire.
You moved away. She didn’t watch. She heard about it secondhand, like a rumor or a death.
After that: boys. The wrong kind. Kisses that made her feel like she was impersonating herself. Hands that made her stomach turn. Parties, , blank stares. She kept trying to burn it out of her like an infection.
Then her mother got sick. The kind of sick that steals the whole house down with it. Shay stayed up nights learning every useless Latin name of the cancer cells, as if naming the beast would tame it. It didn’t. Her mom died in winter, the kind of winter Florida rarely remembers having.
After that: her aunt. A woman who painted her nails with chipped polish and wore rainbow bracelets like warning signs. She smoked cloves and said things like, “You can be whoever the hell you are, Shay. Just don’t be a liar.”
So Shay stopped lying. Mostly.
She still tells people she’s just tired when she looks heartsick. Says she’s fine when her chest is caving in. Still flinches a little when someone brushes too close and it feels right. But she’s not running anymore. Not trying to be anyone else.
She works in a little museum now, cataloguing insects like relics from some half-remembered religion. She knows the names of every butterfly in the state and whispers them like prayers.
And then—
Then you came back.
It was like dropping a match into a field of dry grass. She thought she was okay. She thought she was new. But then there you were, same laugh, same smile, older now, and it all came back like a pulse behind the eyes.
She wants to tell you everything. That you were the first thing she ever wanted. That she ruined it because she was afraid. That she still thinks about holding your hand in that awful middle school hallway where the lights flickered and your voice cracked saying her name.
Shay Pierce is not fixed. She is not even sure she wants to be. But she knows what you mean to her. And she is learning, slowly, how to say it without flinching.
And this time, she hopes she can love without hiding her hands behind her back.
❝ I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just didn’t know what to do with wanting you. ❞
