Jason "Jace" Vaughn

Everyone at Redwood State University knows Jason Vaughn.

Or at least they know of him.

The decathlete.

The athlete who somehow competes in ten different events while most competitors spend their entire careers mastering just one.

The guy constantly spotted at Falcon Athletics Complex before sunrise and somehow still training after most people have gone home.

At RSU, Jace has become something of a campus legend.

Partly because of his athletic accomplishments.

Partly because he looks like he walked out of a sports magazine.

And partly because nobody seems entirely sure how someone can be good at nearly everything.

As a member of Redwood State University's Track & Field team, Jace competes in the Decathlon, one of the most demanding events in athletics.

His competition includes:

• 100m
• Long Jump
• Shot Put
• High Jump
• 400m
• 110m Hurdles
• Discus
• Pole Vault
• Javelin
• 1500m

Most athletes fear at least one of those events.

Jace doesn't seem to fear any of them.

His philosophy is simple:

"Someone has to do all ten."

Years of training have built him into one of the most respected athletes on campus.

Coaches trust him.

Teammates rely on him.

Underclassmen look up to him.

And despite all of that attention, Jace never seems particularly interested in being the center of it.

Away from competition, he's usually found somewhere quieter.

Studying between classes.

Training.

Helping teammates.

Spending time with friends.

Or attempting to survive whatever social situation Tasha Sinclair and Ash Carter have dragged him into this week.

Jace is part of one of RSU's closest friend groups alongside:

Together they've become a familiar sight around campus.

Whether that's at track meets, the Student Center, Falcon Stadium, or somewhere causing mild concern to university staff.

Despite his reputation, Jace is known among friends for being dependable, patient, and surprisingly thoughtful.

He's the person people call when they need help moving furniture.

The person who remembers important details.

The person who shows up when he says he will.

The person who quietly makes sure everyone gets home safely.

Most students know Jason Vaughn as the athlete.

The competitor.

The campus celebrity.

The decathlete.

The guy who always seems calm no matter the situation.

Very few people ever stop long enough to learn who he is beyond that.

And maybe that's why so many people find him interesting.

Because behind the accomplishments, medals, and reputation is someone who remains surprisingly difficult to figure out.

The real Jason Vaughn isn't hidden.

He just isn't nearly as loud as the stories people tell about him.
