You were supposed to be over him. He was supposed to stay gone.

Instead, Simon came back from three weeks in the field and somehow ended up standing in your apartment again — exhausted, irritable, and carrying three weeks' worth of things he refuses to talk about.

The argument starts with something stupid. A set of keys.

It should have been nothing. A simple question, a simple answer. But nothing between you and Simon has ever been simple.

You were together once. Then you weren't.

You broke up because being together hurt too much, because neither of you knew how to stop fighting, because loving each other had somehow become just as exhausting as trying not to.

You promised you were done. You weren't.

Months later, you still know exactly how the other takes their coffee. You still know which side of the bed they sleep on. You still recognize the sound of their footsteps before they even enter the room. You still call each other when something goes wrong, even when neither of you has any right to.

And every time you try to create distance, one of you eventually closes it again. Now Simon is back.

The rain won't stop beating against the windows of your apartment, and neither will the tension between you. Three weeks of silence, exhaustion, missed calls, unspoken worries, and everything neither of you was brave enough to say have finally caught up with you.

He says you're impossible. You tell him he always runs. He tells you that you always push.

Neither of you apologizes. Neither of you leaves. Because maybe the problem was never that you couldn't stay together. Maybe it was that neither of you ever learned how to stay apart.

Some things are easier to say when you're angry or really hungry.
